Terminator 2 Screened Mirror
« on: July 23, 2009, 04:23:15 pm »
Hey guys, this is sorta artwork related :S I have a Terminator 2 arcade machine which is one of those cabs where the monitor is mounted horizontally, and bounced off a mirror to the viewer, which would be fine except the temperature flux and humidity have destroyed the mirror's mirrorness!

Instead of a regular mirror, it appears to be a one way mirror? The light goes from the monitor through the first side of the mirror facing the player, then on the back is a screen printed "BANG" sort of artwork, combined with light reflecting bits in the paint (excuse my terminology) which reflect the picture back. The BANG artwork gets lit up by some bulbs hidden behind it when you get shot, but otherwise all you can 'see' is the light reflecting parts of the artwork which reflect the screen below.

Unfortunately, the paint which is admittely now 18 years old has cracked and peeled. So when you go to play (since the back door is off), you see the garden instead. However I noticed, if you look through the other side... you see you. So the side with the paint reflects, and the other side you can see through.

I suppose it's a bit out of the option to obtain a NOS mirror... or find a way to screen print new light reflective artwork. What would you suggest I do with this? My one thought was to strip all the rest of the paint off, flip the mirror around. Let the reflective side of the mirror reflect the game. This means the 'BANG' lights wouldnt work as there'd be no artwork to light but all the bulbs were blown when I first got it anyway..

I just bought a T2 cab and I am waiting for it to be shipped.  I was searching the forum and found a post that may shed a little light on what you are asking about.

Midway's Terminator 2: Judgement Day had a "blast" graphic.   When the coating on the backside of the glass was applied, a "blast" element didn't get the coating. This allowed light to pass thru it from the backside.  The machine then had a lamp board mounted in behind.  These lamps would flash when you got "hit".   Neat effect, reminds me of old EM shooters.

Yeah that's it.. Sadly that's ruined. I had an idea to tape what was left down, and use light reflective paint on some card to fill in the gaps, but the light reflective specks in the paint weren't abundant enough for the job so I gave up on that.

Really it seems like I can either switch it and use the mirror and lose the blast/bang artwork flash bit, or get a repro piece but I don't think anyone makes these do they? If you know someone who does give me a buzz but I think not..

Congrats on getting a T2 by the way, they're excellent fun! :applaud: Only downside to them in my opinion is the size! If you need any info on the cab feel free to send me a message :)
