Can you use replace any 15Khz Monitor with another?
« on: July 10, 2003, 06:22:03 am »
Hi All!

I've dragged an "ultimate mortal kombat 3" machine out of a skip here and have it sitting in my bedroom. The old 25" wellsgardner monitor has been smashed to pieces and its costs $600 + delivery to get a new monitor of the same model from wellsgardner. My question is this - can I just by any old 25" 15Khz monitor and will it all just connect no problem, or do I have to buy they exact same model as before? Any sites or guides you can recommend?

Many thanks.
John.

By the way, incase you were wondering, I need to replace the entire monitor + chassis. So when I say "can I use any monitor to replace the old one", I mean do all monitors have standard connections to the jamma setup and power supply.

Thanks again for reading.

Yep, only difficulties might be mounting (some monitors have different mounts than others, but with such a new machine it shouldn't be a problem), and minor rewiring is needed, as the previous monitor's connectors likely won't work on the new monitor (no standard for those, but fairly simple to wire the new monitor to the Jamma harness).

Also remember that older monitors need and isolation transformer and newer ones do not.  You must use an isolation transformer if the monitor requires it.

Ah guys, Thank you so much! Im going to pick one up on tomorrow. Actually, I don't know much about isolation transformers, so I guess Ill just ask the arcade guy when I buy it from him.

Thanks again!

Pulled it from a skip, eh?  Did the board come with it?

Is this a term I'm just not used to hearing in south Texas? A "skip"?

British term for 'dumpster.'  As I dumpster dive a lot, and read about others finds in the 'skip' I've picked up on some lingo.

Ahhh gotcha. I kinda had a feeling that's what it meant, anyways.

Down here we don't have any other term for dumpster. What we do have alot of are a lot of dirty people that use their garages as "skips", though.

Most American made and Taiwan/Korean monitors for commercial coin operated video games have standardized mounting frames, power connectors, and video connectors in order to comply with JAMMA standards. You will need to know if you need the "Horizontal shelf mount" or "universal mount" frame.
