Hantarex MTC 900 Problem
« on: July 13, 2009, 09:39:37 am »
Hi All,

well after the issue that my picture would suddenly disappear i got another problem:

i fixed the disappear picture by soldering the video connectors on the pcb again

but now the monitor buzzes and the screen shakes sometime you can hear the current in the screen i guess.
there are two wires that comes from the plug on the tube one of the wires is not so good anymore this has always been so but after the first fix this has gotten worse.

what can it be? a grounding issue? i got a ground wire from the chassis to a metal plate in my cab.
or can it be that the high voltage cables need to be replaced? and so how can i do that?

thanks for answering

Yes they do give a bit of a shock! 25~30kv usually, you were lucky you werent flung into anything to sustain further damage. To replace the wires from the anode means you need to get a new flyback, as you can't really splice that wire due to the such high voltages it contains as you found out!

Discharge the charge from under the anode so you don't get a shock again, then you can lift it off along with the rest of the chassis and replace the flyback (where the big red wire goes) with a new one if that is your problem. Careful of those big capacitors too, they can give you a jolt though not as big as the anode does.

I couldn't say specifically but I know Swallow Amusements do MTC 9000 flybacks, they might do 900 as well (try emailing them if not listed on their site as they do a lot of hantarex repairs)

I know that there are a few differences between the 900/E but I'm not sure if the flyback is one of them will have to wait for someone more knowledgeable on that model to chime in, however I wouldn't bet on them being the same worth looking for a MTC 900 one :)

A guide to discharging? Well there's quite a lot about it in the 'Monitor FAQ' up top. Basically, you get a long screwdriver, 2 alligator clips, clip one end onto the metal shielding going around the front of the tube, clip the other end onto your screwdriver. Then gently slide it in under the anode cap and it will discharge. Make sure you aren't holding onto anything metal, that the alligator clip is far away from your hand etc. and use your right arm to hold it so if it does bite you it won't go through your heart (but if you follow that/common sense and keep away from the metal then it won't anyway).

By no means a thorough guide but if you read the monitor faq sticky there's some more in there. This is what I've always done and it's always worked just fine for me :)
