Need some help cooling down my main PC
« on: July 12, 2009, 07:12:14 pm »
I never really noticed how much heat was coming out of my PC till I read that computer problems thread.  Now I haven't had any performance issues with it yet, but I figured its better to be pro-active about these things.

I spent a good 2 hours unplugging and replugging and moving all the wires around as best I could to get some better airflow. The inside of the PC was quite warm to be honest with you. After I rewired everything and the insides were nice and cool I cleaned out all the dust (as I do every month) so now it seems better but really the point of this thread is to get some ideas for some aftermarket products that I can get to improve airflow and to cool everything off.  I'd like products , manufacturers or even link to stuff on NewEgg.com  to get.

BTW the case is on its side, and the bottom of the case is actually at the top of the pictures.

This is what I started with:

And this is what I ended up with:

And here's with the lights on, so you can see the wires a little better:

forgive my ---smurfy--- Iphone pix.  Also, I know I have some more wire tucking to do. there's like 4 big wires from the bottom of the mobo that go to the front of the case, for the USB, Audio, Memory card reader, and other ports.I'm going to tray and tuck them behind the other side of the case.

I need something to cool my 2 SATA drives, the heat in that area was the hottest, and I was going to add a front case fan. I do not want to go the water cooling route, Im far too paranoid and I don't push my system THAT hard.

here's the computer I bought, I have had it for a year or so:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113044

The main 4 things I wanna cool are the
AMD Phenom 9500 CPU, right now it has an OEM fan/heatsink
BFGTech GeForce8800GT OC, again it has the OEM heatsink/fan shroud
The RAM, though I'm prolly gonna ditch the RAM that came with the CPU and get new RAM, any suggestions?
The SATA HDs. they seem to run a lot hotter then the IDE's I used to run in my youth

EDIT: Atrocious spelling

That first picture reminds me of the inside of my case.  When I first had some heat problems (before I got a new mobo) I added a fan to a back grill that had the mounting holes for one but didn't already have one preinstalled.  Its still there and my temp goes around mid 30s (running a amd athlon 64 3200) after I've been on longer than a few hours.

Concerning hard drive cooling I'd check out this page Newegg link.  I don't favor any brand over another so I'd just check out reviews and see if there is one that will fit in your case (kinda crowded in there).

Number one thing is you want at least one of the fans blowing OUT if one already isn't.
Remove the heat from inside the case instead of just blowing it around.

Or you could just oil cool it.  :laugh2:

the fan on the sidesucks air in towards the bottom, the one facing the back of the case blow it out, Im going to add a second fan to blow air out; Ive even considered a blow hole, but A LOT of people have suggested just getting a new case and a modular power supply.  I think those are the first 2 steps Im going to take AFTER I get a hard drive cooler.

just gotta save up; it be easy if some one would buy my MKII or KI1 cabinets :p

There are some inexpensive refurb cases available from ThermalTake at: http://www.thermaltakestore.com/chassis.html

I bought the M9 and added a 2nd 120mm intake fan on the front; does the job nicely.
