Need help on fuses
« on: July 07, 2009, 01:01:15 pm »
I need some advice on replacing fuses.

I have an Atari Football 2-player game.  One of the fuses blew in the power supply.  The fuse specs are:

3AG, 2.5AMP, 125V slow blow

I can't seem to find this specific fuse.  The most common ones I find are 2.5AMP, 250V.

Any suggestions?

I /think/ that's okay.  A fuse will blow if there is too much current going thru it, which is why it's important to match amperage.

If the fuse is blown inside your power supply it's blown for a reason though.

As long as it fits, and the amperage rating is correct, and the voltage rating on the new fuse is higher, you're golden.  It'll work fine.

Ed-it:  What Peale said.  Buy a few, cause odds are you'll blow some sorting out why it popped in the first place.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

It's my fault it blew.  I was checking something out inside the machine and bumped (pretty hard) in the PCB connector.  It came mostly off and the fuse popped when that happened.

Thank you about the advice.  It was really the voltage part I was concerned about.  There's no problem in finding the right amperage, just the matching voltage.

The voltage rating on a fuse is really only there to prevent arcing when it blows; more current and higher voltage = more likely to arc.  Increase the length of the fuse, and that probability drops.

At the power levels we play with, its not too much of a problem.
