getting a tv to power on automatically.
« on: June 30, 2009, 11:31:37 pm »
Hi all, I've got a Zenith crt tv that i've got working with my pc that is going in my mame cab.
I want to have it automatically power on as soon as i plug it in, is there any way i can do that through the tv options, or am i going to have to bridge the power connection/ wire up a button to go outside?
also, does anyone have any idea how to identify what kind of tv it is?

What you could do is get something like an IR Blaster, which is an infrared transmitter/reciver for a PC.  Then script the PC in your cab to send the IR power on signal to your TV when the PC boots up.

Basicly, point it DIRECTLY at the IR reciver on the TV, after that it'd be a simple as finding out what the specific code for the TV's power on command is and flashing that signal and finding a way to script that as a bootup event.

The only downside is your TV wouldn't turn on untill you're well into Windows, so it could be 1-3mins from power on untill the TV responds.  But at least it'd have some sense of grace to it rather than you reaching for a TV remote at the same time.

The upside is that if you're using soft15khz you'll skip all the 31khz signals :D

If he's using a CRT TV, he's not using soft 15khz, he's using the video card's built in TV output.  I imagine either YPbPr component or S-Video.

On some TVs (like mine), a toothpick wedged in next to the power button to hold it down works.

Ghetto? Yes. Effective? Yes. Learned it from here.

some zenith tv's can be set to do this via a service menu setting . ( " AC on ")
PM for the entry code  ;)

a simple circuit can be built as an add-on to actuate most  pwr switches....
