Hmm... some like XP on cabs... I don't.

I wouldn't try Linux for a cab yet as there aren't enough FEs ect. yet.

So I guess 98 is fine... I would avoid Win ME for the obvious reasons! Win 2K is a very good OS, but isn't the best for gaming.

i personally run xp on my cab and couldnt be happier. the stability is what i luv. i havent seen the "blue screen of death" since my ME days (which, i must say, is a total crap os). i run all of the main emus (zsnes, gens, z26, virtuanes, visual boy advance, daphne, zinc, mame, epsxe) without a problem

If it's stability you strive for; Linux is your clear choice! So I assume you really meant;

A) Ease of use
B) Compatibility
C) Conformity

HONEST TO GOD I HAVE NEVER HAD A CRASH W/ LINUX!!!

(It is unfair not to note that I don't often do things to processor heavy in Linux... no video games, but MP3s, Movies, and all office applications are really what I do in Linux...)

Compared to Linux, XP is flaky at best! I have had like 5-10 crashes on my XP machine! (okay so that is better than 100-100000 with Win 98 or Win ME.

Im sorry but I would rather use microsoft--> so out of them all is 98 the best? I will have a pretty decent computer. Like maybe a P4 2.4 533, 512mb of pc2700 333MHZ etc.

i actually do run linux on my older (1.4 ghz) pc, never had it crash, but for my mame cab i wanted to run a few pc games that were not linux compatible. i was mentioning stability in relation to os's that the poster had probably used. plus, most people who are asking this question probably don't know how to use linux

I would run Win XP Pro on that machine.  Better code to take advantage of the CPU, memory, etc.  Plus, it's much more stable :).  98's great for a ~500MHz machine.

Having been using XP for quite a while now, I can honestly say that I would never go back to Windows '98 etc. (except if I really wanted to run an 'old' game or something).

As said before, the stability is great, and thing's tend to run 'smoother' in XP...

...I have never used Linux etc. tho..

I use Win ME, make the HD tests and correct my erros with Norton and couldn't be happier!

I think the best will be Linux because it's very fast and accurate! The problem is the lack of compatibility with most of the FE's but i think that's being solved very fastly!

The ideal, in my opinion, would be MS-DOs running a front-end with all the roms and all the emus... ;D

I don't think Dos can utilise the power of today's pc's (from what I've read anyway).  I have dual boot 98SE and XP Pro.  98SE for the dual trackball games, XP Pro the rest.  I don't recall having any stability problems with XP except the odd halt due to a slightly unstable overclock but that's only under stress programs and benchmarking.  Mame, movies, mp3s, games all work fine

Windows 98 (default)
Mandrake Linux 9.1
Windows 2000

I use XP pro and couldn't be happier.  Everything is much easier and smoother like the others said.  Plus you get better media playback in XP as opposed to 98.  So if you want to use daphne at all, that's the way to go.

I still use win98se on my cab as xp does not support the wingman warrior spinner I use. Esle I definately would allready have upgraded to xp. It might not be as stable as linux but it surely is much more stable then win9x.

Currently, dual t-ball games are only playable in Win98SE, but Robin is working on a version of MAME Analog + that will support this in XP.  Might be a while before it's out.  Otherwise agree with the other posts about stability.

In general, memory is kinda the defining factor, 98SE will run with 64M of memory, and tends to lose some stability with more the 512M.  WinXP NEEDS 128M, wants 256M and runs better with more.

My main point is if you are buying a new OS, you might want to go for XP and wait on the new version on MAME Analog +.

Yes, sorry, I had forgotten Win98 was required atm for dual trackball support - a very worthy reason for many people.

The only REAL version of MAME!  j/k

MAME Analog + allows you to assign dual mice (trackballs) to different players, assign spinners to different mouse axes, dual lightgun support, and better analog shifter and pedal controls.

There is no denying that Win2000 is more stable than Win98, but most people that would go with Win2000 would rather just use WinXP instead. People consider Win2000 a "worker's OS" and WinXP is a "gamer's OS".

One thing to consider is that XP(unless you have an educational version) requires activation and can only be put on one computer. Where as 2000 can be installed on multiple computers(if you willing to violate the license agreement). Also I agree that XP is a little better for PC games. I can't tell any difference between XP and 2000 for mame because it doesn't run like a PC game it runs like a program doing massive calculations.

Mike trust me on this, I've done benchmarks.  Anything that has anything to do with your video card (i.e. a hardware accelerated app)  runs smoother in xp than 2000.  2000 is a terrible gaming os.  And yes at this point windows mame is advanced enough to be considered a true game.

98 is a better choice than 2000
xp can be a better choice than 98

I agree however I dont prefer to use WinXP because it takes a significant amount more resources than Win2k.

Think again... xp takes exactly the same amount of resources as 2000 if you turn off the xp themes.  You have no excuse, get over it and use xp.  :P

If I knew ANYTHING about Linux and found a great frontend I would consider just using that. However, I don't know anything about it so I'll have to pass.

Plus there are some PC games I may use in my machine that I couldn't play in Linux, but that's nothing major.

How to get into Linux:

My new hobby is doing whatever in my poor power to destroy Microshaft by spreading Linux as much as I can.

If you have broadband, download Knoppix Linux from Linuxiso.com (or something). Make sure you download the Boot-CD version.

The Knoppix boot CD is truly amazing software. It is Linux w/ KDE that has NO installation! You just pop it into your CD-Rom drive and it brings you into a graphical environment! You don't need a hard drive! It doesn't even use the hard drive, but it can read your Windows partition. It also comes w/ Wine, Xine, XMMS, hundreds of games, 2 office sweets, and a good driver database.

That is the best way to get into Linux! No risk, no installation... it's what got me going. It satisfied my good OS jones for ~ a week until I had to install Mandrake 9.1 (really nice!)

Anyway; I HIGHLY recomend trying that out! I still remember when I blew away my entire HD w/ Calera OpenLinux 3 or something... that kept me off linux for a long time, but Knoppix got me back into it!

If you (anyone) want I will ship you a copy of knoppix for a buck or two (Literaly the EXACT shipping price)

You still might not want it on a cab, but at least you will be enlightened : )

hey anthony691, have you tried lycoris? i run it, and i really like it. havent tried mandrake yet, tho...

Lycoris is pretty nice, but Mandrake is really more complete IMHO. I have also fallen for RPMs I can't remember if Lycoris supports them, but I couldn't use a distro that doesn't anymore : (

Mandrake was just the first distro to have A VERY user-friendly installer. That   is how it gained it's user-base...

I mean... I couldn't see ONE THING about Mandrake 9.1 I would want to change... not one!

One thing about Linux is startup/shutdown times are about 2X those of Windows which is a bit of a pain...

Sadly I am too lazy to get a hardware modem in my computer and Linux can't support my Winmodem (yes I have dialup) so I have to restart to change OSs a whole lot.

Hint to those w/ dialup who want Linux; stop by Kinko's; many of them let you use thier internet for free :)

I would give Mandrake a shot... So much software... (drool)

i just d/l Mandrake v9.1, and am now viewing this site from Konqueror Web Browser. this OS is freakin' amazing. Everyone, go to www.linuxiso.org for the coolest OS evermade!

ps: no sarcasm involved... i recommend this to anybody. you can even have Windows and Mandrake-Linux on the same computer. mine boots to a mnu to choose your OS. easy to setup, too.

thanks anthony691 for a kick*** suggestion

It really is great too! You can even change all of the parts of LILO... it is just so great!

I just got Knoppix STD... it is linux for the hackers at heart.

PS: It isn't on linuxiso, but you can find it by doing a Google on "Knoppix STD"

advanceMENU, for one... also, konqueror desktop environment has a shell-type program which i assume can work as a FE, but i could be mistaken. never tried it out, but i will.

Mine works on it... I haven't tested it for a bit though... But its Java based and uses jdk1.2+

Is JFront (search the board for it... I don't have an official website for it yet... next version will thought...  But the current 2d version is skinnable and compareable to many others out there.
