Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen
« on: June 29, 2009, 11:16:58 pm »
It's been out nearly a week now, and not a single person's talked about it yet here, which I find...interesting.

Rottentomatoes gives it around a 20%.  According to Paramount's exit polls, 91% considered it equal to or better than the first.  Obviously this isn't a valid survey, as they may be wording their poll to produce those numbers.  The few people I know enjoyed the movie completely.  It begs the question:

What exactly are critics expecting when they head into a summer blockbuster like this?  Most say that there isn't enough plot, too much mayhem going on, or there really isn't much plot concerning humans.  So what would make this better in their eyes?  Robot relationships?  Diplomatic relations between robots instead of fighting?  Tons of dialogue discussing robot feelings with witty, intelligent observations of the world?

After reading a local paper's preview of coming summer movies, I can only assume that alot of these critics opinions are tainted by reading what other critics have said, or what they think other critics will think.  I also think they look at who's involved in the movie (Bay in this case,) and automatically go into it with a mental block on actually objectively judging it.

So what's the opinion here?

Haven't seen this one yet but this certainly seems possible.  The first one was total crap so this one can be better and still only a 20.

I liked it.  It is was it's designed to be: a movie based on a line of toys.

  • giant transforming robots - CHECK
  • not one, but two SMOKING hawt chicks - CHECK
  • did I mention GIANT TRANSFORMING ROBOTS?!?!?!? - CHECK
  • Michael Bay EXPLOSIONS! - CHECK
  • Peter Cullen doing Optimus Prime's voice - CHECK
  • ZOMG GIANT TRANSFORMING ROBOTS ZOMG - CHECK

That said, I actually DO have complaints about the movie.

A) The Deceptions need what's in Sam's brain.  Humans are squishy.  They aren't taking too much care considering what's in stake.

B) Too many robots spend time standing around - in VEHICLE MODE - not doing anything at all.  The airplane and warehouse come to mind.  Seriously, why?

I know there are other things, but this is what comes to mind at the moment.

...if it's anything like the first movie, they stand around doing nothing because transforming is impossible.  They morph into a randomly flailing ball of sharp metal parts that looks curiously like a starship explosion and then wham they're a car or a ship or a robot.  It looked stupid, especially when they didn't even bother to show the whole robot, just swapping camera angle every 1.3 seconds so that you never actually see the whole transfomer.  It's Godzilla quality on a bigger budget.

The 22yo kid that works here came in yesterday and told me this was easily the best movie of the summer and asked if I had seen it. I replied I had not and had no intention unless it shows Megan Fox's cans. I then qualified my replied by stating I was never really into the transformers, they came along after I stopped caring about cartoons. He then told me the first Transformers movie was the best movie of all time.
So, in the second statement, he lost all street cred and I simply could not trust his assessment of the new movie. I don't know what the best movie of all time is, but I can think of at least 200 better movies than Transformers.
You probably remember me from such films as `The Revenge of Abe Lincoln' and `The Wackiest Covered Wagon in the West'

Yeah, meant to mention that, there's that little issue of the laws of conservation of matter involved with taking an object the size of a car and turning it into something the size of a building by rotating a few parts.  Cybertron may be far away but physics are physics.   :)

Even putting all that aside, though, and it is just a scifi movie... Shia Lewhatever was unwatchable, playing that same babbling moron he plays in every movie.

So, I'll watch this, but not until I can do it at home.

Maybe they have huge speakers in them making all those sounds and it's really all an illusion.  That can be Transformers 3:  It Got Windy

Megan Fox is insanely, absolutely, indisputably hot.

She has toe thumbs and really trashy tattoos... otherwise, agree.

Those tattoos...ughh! I've noticed that she appears to be taking the Angelina Jolie PR moves lately. She mostly keeps them covered up so she looks more sophisticated and star-like instead of trailer trash.

It almost makes me want to cry seeing such beauty tainted with skanky ink.

Depends on what side of the bed i wake up on when it comes to my feelings on Transformers 2.

Pros:
Glad to see more Autobots and Decepticons
Finally introduced the Matrix of Leadership
Frank Welker did the voices of Soundwave/Starscream.
Megan Fox is.... hot

Cons:
No Unicron
Trying to figure out what Transformer is what in the movie.
Arcee had what.... two lines...then destroyed...I was ticked off the same way when Jazz got killed off in the first one.
WTF was going through Micheal Bay head when he came up with Devastator.
The fight scenes was taking scrap metal and squeezing them together...
How did anything survive after that MichealBay-a-thon of explosions...
Jetfire was too old...
The Fallen....couldhave done better with Unicron...
and since when do you have hot sexy girls working on bikes in a mechanic shop...ONLY IN HOLLYWOOD!!!

The scene with Megan Fox taking off those leather pants outside the garage was worth the price of admission alone.

But seriously, I thought the movie was good. Nothing spectacular, but not bad. For some reason all my friends hated it.

I haven't seen it yet, but I am planning to this weekend.  I liked the first one and expect to like this one.

I think if you go into it expecting it to be what it is, a summer action movie, you will like it better.

I have no idea why anyone would go into this movie expecting reality or trying to fit the robots into the laws of physics.   :dizzy:

I'll watch it...next year on HBO. Just sayin', if this is the best movie of the summer (according to the kid at work), then it is an awfully weak crop this year.

With the kiddos, I don't get to see many movies that appeal to me at the theatre. But I am going to make time to see Inglourious Basterds.

I don't know why everyone has a problem with a car unfolding into a three story robot.   They're not making matter out of nothing, it's just the parts unfolding to bulk it up.

Um, it doesn't beg the question. I'm guilty of the same usage, mind. Look it up, though. Anyways, I wondered why I saw a google search box with transformers in it. Had no idea. The first one was pretty tripe-y. Can't see this one being any worse.

The only way that's even remotely possible is for the robot to be as dense as styrofoam at the most.  I wouldn't mind it being sort of out of scale but the degree to which it doesn't fit is just foolish.

So you only like non-fiction and documentaries?

Other movies, with a good story, decent visuals (other than Megan Fox), that are entertaining buy some suspension of disbelief.  When the visuals are confusing and weird, the story sucks, and the characters are annoying enough that you want them dead (other than Megan Fox), disbelief goes out the window and you start to think about ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- like "why is the Camaro turning into a building sized robot".

I'd like to point out that Bay didn't include certain robots due to mass issues yet in other cases he completely ignores his own rule against said transformations.  He seems against making a good movie (all around).

My biggest complaint is a movie about giant transforming robots involves humans way too much.  I could have done without learning what NEST does and how they plan on turning on Prime.  Yes Megan Fox is the tolerable one but Bay doesn't seem to think much of her except that she is hot.  It would be nice if she did something other than run around with that jerk.  They should start over and cast her as lead and kill off the other kid.

Why does he think its okay to include pretenders and not give a back story?  Its nice that certain parts of the line are being used but then you see all the lame Autobots tossed in the movie and then you wonder why couldn't someone who knows Transformers be involved.

Ravage was cool.

It seems as though he tried to use as many ideas from all the Transformer material ever produced as possible into the movie and then failed.

Keep in mind I'm one of those idiots that bought the Canuck version of the animated movie on VHS so I could hear Spike say "oh ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, what are we gonna do now"

 :laugh2:

Frank Welker did the voices of Soundwave/Starscream.

Wow I didn't know that -- that's great!  I was very disappointed that he didn't get the job for the voice of Megatron in the first movie. No one does Megatron like Welker.

Im probably the only person on the planet that hated the movie.

I only enjoyed 2 things from the movie.

- Peter Cullen reprising his role as Optimus Prime.
- Megan Fox.

The rest....garbage thrown in a cement mixer IMO.

Chris Latta was the original voice of Starscream in the 80's cartoon. Also Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe.

Starscream in the newer cartoon is voiced by Tom Kenny....he also voices Spongebob Squarepants.

Chris Latta was the original voice of Starscream in the 80's cartoon. Also Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe.

Starscream in the newer cartoon is voiced by Tom Kenny....he also voices Spongebob Squarepants.

...and [one of] the Twins....and 95% of cartoon voices that aren't Billy West or Frank Welker.

Megan Fox is insanely, absolutely, indisputably hot.
She has toe thumbs and really trashy tattoos... otherwise, agree.

All laughing aside, I wouldn't kick her out of bed for the thumbs or the tats.

The thumb thing is some sort of prematurity birth defect. I have a coworker that had it real bad. Some of his fingers looked like someone bashed the tips in with a sledge hammer. Also, he finally had major surgery on his toes in which they broke them all and reset them with pins.

So... has anyone ever seen her toes?

Im probably the only person on the planet that hated the movie.

I only enjoyed 2 things from the movie.

- Peter Cullen reprising his role as Optimus Prime.
- Megan Fox.

The rest....garbage thrown in a Mix Master IMO.

Would mini paper bags on her thumbs be an option?

Though it wouldn't be necessary.  The thumbs are pretty much the last thing I'd be concerned with while...ya know....

The problem with toe thumbs and hoof feet is you're looking at obvious genetic defects and even though you may not want kids with them, you still entertain those notions of 'unfit to bear my children'.   :-\

Ain't dat da truth. My music theory instructer had big toe thumbs. I was always amazed how articulate he was with them on the piano.

Sorta back on topic, I loved the voices in the original cartoon. Especially Optimus and Megatron. They're such interesting and rich timbres. Back then, though, I had the idea they digitally enhanced those like Megatron and Starscream.

Saw it yesterday....

1. The desert fight was way too long...seemed like that segment alone was 30 minutes.

2. The 2 twins with the golden grille and "---smurfette----ass ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?---"?? WTF?? This is Transformers?

3. Pleasant surprise that "The Matrix of Leadership" showed up in the storyline.

4. Disappointed in Devastator iteration, they could've made a more defined and believable Gestalt.

5. A lot of action...I guess to fill the void of a compelling storyline.

I'd give it 2 out of 5 stars.

Saw it a few days ago. It's a Transformers movie ...

So of course it's nothing special, but still, I kinda liked it. The bots look great and there was even some sort of story. Don't see how a Transformer movie could be much better apart from abandoning the whole principle of the original cartoons.

Fight scenes in movies aren't my thing in general (about as boring as car chases), but in this case it was even worse because it was practically impossible to see what was going on with all the bot parts.

I will go against popular opinion, but Megan Fox doesn't do much for me. Not sure why, but I guess she's simply a little too skanky for my taste. Too much eye brow, lips and shiny tanned skin. She has a nice figure, but she has the most annoying voice (barring that of some Alaskan woman in a stewardess outfit).

I saw it and I can honestly do with the corny ass love story between Sam and Makaeyla(SP?) It's a Transformers, a series about ROBOTS with not a whole lot of concern for the humans...That's Hollywood for you though, I watched the Original 1986 movie on DVD recently just to wash the taste of this movie.

I also HATED Devastator in this movie, and wished the constructicons could have done some fighting in robot mode at least...

Ah, another white-o-file.

No. In fact, pears generally have smaller, or even small, breasts. It's part of what makes for the shape. That girl's a slender pear, by the way. You can rub her down, but you can't spank her. Which is lacking, of course, but could be worse.

It was already a 150 minute movie.

God almighty.

Actually she apparently underwent some surgery to have her boobage increased. Look for the topless pictures taken of her on the set of "Jennifer's Body".
