Hi,

I got my PSX mod chipped years ago as a kid... never got round to using it...sold it.. and today bought it back!

I'm trying to burn a backup i have on my PC here but when i pop it in the PSX it just displays 'playstation(r)' with out the logo or anything... i have a backup someone did for me of another game and that plays fine.....any idea's?

i'm using alcohol 120% and the backup works in ePSXe

PS so excited i got my PSX back!! - i still have a PS2 and PS3... needed my PSX for when i hit my mid life crisis ! (planning ahead)

on another note... i remember the backups that work on my console wouldn't work on a mates that may have had a different mod chip ! i'm stumped

It depends on the modchip and the game. Later games didn't function correctly with older chips. New technology and such to detect the mods.

The optical drive could just be going.

I had a chipped PSX that'd only read burned discs if you turned it on it's left side 90 degrees. It'd work at normal orientation for ligit discs but the CRTs were an issue.

...Then I was carrying a bunch down a hall for a gaming event and the PS1 fell outta my arms. It's dead now.

after trying again the back-up didn't work in epsxe! so i took a backup i did of another game and it plays fine :-).

a few years ago i did drop this thing down a flight of stairs (carpeted) the laser de-railed put just popped back on no problem! certainly made better than the ps3

atari anniversary on ps1 is brilliant btw :-) - some good video interviews

Crapped laser rails. Are we still able to get that part? IIRC Lik-Sang used to sell them....

I'm slightly horrified to even power my PSX anymore, I just don't want to have it die without finding replacement parts for it.

Dunno. I just eventually finished collecting ligit copies of every PS1 light gun game I wanted and use my PS2 to run them now.

Ps1s are stupidly cheap and plentiful. It's just like the Genesis. Unless you have particular attachment to one Ps1 there's no reason to worry you'll ever be unable to get or have one.

I know that my PSX was very particular about the brand of CD-R I used, and most of the ones being produced today it really doesn't like.

Dave, depends how you're backing up the game. Also IIRC the model of PSX and Modchip needed to be compatible for certain games to 'work'. Is it a PSX or a PSOne because a lot of the PSOne modchips couldn't beat the Region lockout. As Ginsu has said, try a better brand of CDR or try burning slower. Also, games around the Wip3out (Wipeout 3) era had anti-modchip code built in, that needed the ISO to be patched to run.

If your drive is going out, you can buy a new one from richspsxparts.com. I didn't wanna ditch my modded system, even after getting a PSOne and bootdisc, so I bought one and dropped it in. Worked like a charm.

One thing to bear in mind is that you want to look for the most reliable laser model. Rich's stocks most versions, but certain models are better than others. I know there were issues with some models being less able to read past scratches and durability. I could've gone with the same model I had (which was a good laser), but I decided to go with the PSOne laser model. If you go that route, you also have to buy a ribbon cable extension, as the ribbon on the laser is shorter.

All laser models are interchangeable between systems.

I just bought a 90001 series and I'm pretty sure they can't be soft-modded because of the exploit-preventing measures Sony took with the BIOS. Gotta rely on Swap Magic. I'm still gonna try to soft-mod it, as I've heard counter claims of people being able to do it, but at this point I'm not hopeful. That's okay, I've got a modded PS and a PSOne and PS-X-Change boot disc, not to mention a PC with TV-out and enough emulators to tackle any game.

That is correct. PS1 backups will not load via Swap Magic.

Yeah, I was mistaken. Playing import and bootleg PS1 games on the PS2 wasn't a priority anyway since, as I say, I'm covered regardless.

I'm hoping I can pull off a softmod, because I don't trust my soldering enough to try installing a chip myself, and I really don't wanna ship the system off and pay a lot to have it done. Swapping's a minor annoyance that I'll put up with if I have to.

Edit: Hmmm, as much as I see people saying that they can't get the softmods to work, some are saying that they have been able to get them going using the Action Replay Max. I might be in luck.

Free MCBoot is a softmod for the PS2. It allows the execution of unsigned code on the PS2 but it does not bypass the PS2's optical drive protections. You still can't run ISOs burned to DVDR.

What you can run is HDDLoader which you can then use some tools to transfer games to the HDD over ethernet or directly use the HDD in a PC to dump games onto it. Of course HDDLoader does not support all PS2 games and there is no support for PS1 games.

FreeMCBoot does allow you to run a CDVD Loader, which will load patched PS2 ISOs burned to DVDR, trick the PS2, and load the game. However conversion of CD ISOs to DVD for CDVD Loader is a pain in the ass. So is the patching. In general it's an unpleasent experience. I gave up on trying that, it wasn't fun.

I just use HDDLoader and HDDumpServer to transfer stuff to the HDD over ethernet.

I use HDDLoader mostly to dump the ligit copies of my PS2 light gun collection so I don't have to worry about the discs getting damaged or stolen at gaming events.

well I've burned a few PS1 games and they seem to play fine etc so i think i picked a dodgy image at the start.

my PS2 is running HD Advance 3.0 and a 250GB HD, some games don't work as mentioned but WOW is it worth it over trying to load off DVD's or CD's :-)

in summary ! mod chip your PSX and just HD Loader/Advance your PS2 !

PS3... well... we'll have to wait and see

Dev 'Test' PS3 units can load PS3 ISOs off of ANY media. USB, DVD, BluRay, HDD, whatever you throw at it.

Of course these machines are very rare in the wild and eBay for thousands and thousands of dollars.

One of the goals of PS3 modding is to install Test system firmware software onto stock retail units. ...It's not going well.

I've got a slim, so I'd be limited to using the buggy USB HD method. Might check into a fat later, if only for hard drive use.

I've been looking at chips. I can solder, but I'm not sure if I trust my soldering enough to try it myself. Kind of an expensive piece to fry. I'm really only recently getting my soldering hands back.

I looked at the solderless option, but it has mixed reviews. Everything from "works fine" to "I bricked 3 systems".

Any recommended chips?

Everything I've read says to avoid the DMS4 EZI solderless. Heard some BAD things about them.

I play everything either using a flip-top to swap with FreeMCboot, or I just load games to my hard drive (PS2 fat).
