Using a vertical monitor horizontally
« on: July 08, 2003, 01:07:42 pm »
Hi there,

Is there any way I can convert a vertical monitor to be used as a horizontal monitor?  It is an older WG vertical monitor, and I want to use it in a Jamma machine (not Mame) so I don't thing there is a rotate option on Jamma boards...so I would have to probably rewire some things (not a problem if it is only a few wires or so...)

Thanks!

A vertical arcade monitor is usually only called such due to its mounting.   In most cases if you mount it horiz it will display a horz game properly with no changes.   If you feed the horiz game into it when vertical the horiz game will be on its side.  Thus when the monitor is placed horiz it will display the h game properly.

But aren't vertical monitors scanlines different?  I know if you put vertical scan lines on a horizontally mounted monitor it looks a little wierd.

heh... lol.. they are different because the monitor is on it's side. (think about it -- or draw yourself a picture)

(vert monitor w/scanlines)

 | | | | | | | | |
 | | | | | | | | |
 | | | | | | | | |

 ---------------

(vert monitor rotated to its side w/scanlines)

Not to scale and I can't in ASCII make the simluated scanlines same width.. but hopefully you get the idea

I thought real verticle monitors were like this:

___________
|----------------|
|----------------|  (vert monitor)
|----------------|
|----------------|
|__________|

|   |   |   |   |   |   |   |
|   |   |   |   |   |   |   |  (vert monitor on its side)
|   |   |   |   |   |   |   |
-------------------------

I guess I just thought vert monitors had horizontal scanlines

They don't. The only difference from a vertical to a horizontal monitor is the way it's mounted. I have a rotatable real arcade monitor, so I know this for sure.

The reason turning on scanlines for vertical game in Mame on a horizontal monitor looks weird is that they're 90 degrees out of phase with the natural scan lines on your monitor.
