Dirt Behind LCD Screen
« on: June 22, 2009, 08:52:54 pm »
Anyone ever seen this before?  I just bought an LCD computer monitor off eBay to use in a cab and it appears like there is a lot of dirt behind the screen.  Any ideas on what to do??

does it look like a cloudy smudge although you can see the picture through it?

24 inch iMacs suffer from this. They have some coating letting loose. Nothing to do about that.
Most common though is that bugs/dust/worms/fungus gets inside the screen through the heat vent slots on the back. Nothing much to do about that either. You can disassemble and clean the thing, but I wonder if it is an easy job.

Did you buy it knowing this? If not, you should complain.

No I did not.  I have complained.  We'll see what happens there.

The crappy thing is that this would be a great monitor for my project minus the dust behind the screen.  No dead pixels, great viewing angles, etc...

Is it even possible to get the front off to clean behind there?

Yes you can get to it.  take apart the calm shell case, remove the back metal protector over the circit boards, remove the boards, remove the metal shroud holding the lcd panel to the back lite. Discard all that tape, you dont need it.  remove lcd from backlite, clean back of lcd panel and front of back lite panel.

While you are in there replace the 2-5 caps on the secondary side of the power supply, often 470uf 25v or so. (sometimes 820uf)  get good ones.  Panasonic cf series are very good, low esr electolitical caps.
