Topcoat over poly?
« on: June 14, 2009, 07:24:31 pm »
Does anyone know if there is anything I can put on top of some poly to make the surface even shinier/slicker?  I'm going to be putting about 6 or 7 coats of poly over some stained birch plywood and I want to get it real smooth.  I plan on sanding up to 600 grit (or maybe higher if I feel like it).  Can I put some wax or something else on top and smooth it out to 1000 or 1500 grit or should I just stick with the poly?

Any tips would be great!

stick with poly

Hmmm...  I just sanded it down with 400 grit and reapplied a thin coat of poly.  I don't think I'll be able to buff it to 1000 grit because it will only be as smooth as the last coat, right?  Am I missing something?  How do people get such a smooth finish on furniture and stuff???
