Xbox 360 Media Center
« on: June 12, 2009, 02:51:36 pm »
I know a lot of you have PC/networking expertise, so I hope someone can help.

I can't for the life of me get my 360 connected to my Vista 64 machine for MCE.
I thought it was my norton firewall, but I disabled it, and it still didn't work.

My 360 sees the net fine for XBL, so I can't figure out wht it doesn't connet to the PC.
I entered the console code that the 360 gave me but it does not detect it.

I'm NOT using the MS wireless adapter. I'm using a linksys router with DD-WRT.

Maybe there's a setting on the wireless router(s) that I need to adjust?
Any suggestions?

It has been a while since I tried it, so I am not sure what to try. I just wanted to suggest streaming from Windows Media Player instead. It works a lot better for me.

I can't stream, because I can't connect to the PC for some reason.
No problems getting out on the internet, but I can't see my networked PC :dunno

In WMP, go to the library tab then Media Sharing. If the 360 is on the network, you will see it as a choice. Check the box to share it. After that, the 360 should be able to find the PC. The 360 only communicates with WMP or media center, so it won't find your computer if they are not set up.

just generally speaking, the media center extender built into the 360 blows.  it is slow and crappy.  you are much better off just using the windows media player sharing to access your media.

there is a great program called PlayOn that allows you to access Hulu adn various other online media, but it currently does not support local media at this point.  but if you set up windows media player sharing properly, you should be able to access all of that on the 360 with very few problems.

+1 million

Tversity should be the beginning and the end of the conversation of sharing media between a Windows machine and an Xbox.

Personally I host my media on my QNAP Nas which uses Twonky

Thanks for all the advice.  :applaud:
I brought this up at work, and two coworkers began to squabble between Tversity and Orb. They came to the conclusion that Orb was better. That was the route I went.
The 360 was ablet to "see" the PC and all the folders I assigned with Orb.
It saw the folders, but it couldn't play any videos (have me an error, my guess it that it needs the codec or something). It also would see any of my pictures. I could getto the folders, but when I picked the folder to play a slideshow, it was "loading" for about a minute or so, then told me not files avaliable. This was late last night and didn't have the patience to fool around with it. It'll try again tonight, and I'll try Tversity as well.

Tversity installs a codec pack for you, it'll have all you need.  Can stream all types of video, audio, and pictures.  Also streams some internet video, not sure what all, but I know YouTube is included.

It also will transcode media for you on the fly.  So anything your computer can play, your xbox can play.

I have some music as .mpc files, no problem.  Movies as .ogg or .mkv, no problem.  Though, getting it to include subtitles can be tricky.

Sounds like I'll try Tversity before I start messing with Orb again. Thanks.
I'll let you guys know how it goes tomorrow, if I get a chance tonight (dart league tonight).
