Hi all,
Picked up a (free) ancient VGA pc monitor (I think it was Dad's first VGA, from possibly our 386!) that is non multisync (or fixed frequency, I believe??)
It says "Osborne VGA 031" on the front, with a sticker on the back that says "VGA031" with a serial number.
Haven't been able to find any info about Osborne thru googling.
Running an equally ancient matrox mystique pci card (on a Pii 300mhz

):
Displays windows fine in 256 colours at 640x480.
Displays DOS fine on bootup.
But dmame (with all auto settings), everything goes wonky as soon as the roms are loaded, and I get either rolling images or split screens or just staticy snow.
So: either the card or monitor (or both) don't support:
resolution mame is choosing?
refresh rate mame is choosing?
colour depth mame is choosing?
some other variable mame has control over?
Some/all of above?
windows mame (what used to be called mamew

) seems to display things properly, which presumably has something to do with directdraw based on windows setup??
Apart from mechanically working through every combination of mame settings, anyone have some hints on the things I should be checking? I'd prefer to be using dmame, as i expect the ghetto pc will have enough trouble with pacman without grinding under win98se.
Just to complicate things, the advcfg utlity displays various testmodes correctly, which I then saved. But when I ran advmenu, I was back to rolling, random lines/noise. weird, huh.
Oh, and by the way, I know the PC/card/monitor are crap and i should buy new ones, but the point of this is that all of it was free, and if it runs pacman and galaga then I'm reasonably happy.
