Sooner or later he's going to bite the hand that feeds him a little too hard and get backhanded off that stool.  He was really good for a long time but has long since crossed the line between working great material and working for himself.

Wouldn't he seem like kind of a tool if he refused to bite the hand that feeds him?  I  mean, I know he jokes around, but he really does do journalism after all.  Frankly, he does some of the most trustworthy journalism IMHO.

Erm, no, that's not journalism, it's satire.  He is a journalist the way the Onion is journalism, only presented straighter.  It's actually pretty sad that so many people use him as their only news source - same way it's sad that so many use the idiot right wing talking heads for theirs.

BTW, he has been a tool for a long time now.  That happened right about when he stopped trying to present the material and started trying to be the material.

Exactly.  It's a skit, not a report.

...I think Chad is over analyzing this clip and Mr. Stewart in general.  It's a COMEDY program on a COMEDY CHANNEL... well no ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- it's going to take a COMEDY approach to things... sheesh!

That's my precise point.  You see it for what it is.  A lot of people don't and consider it not only a trusted news source but their only trusted news source... like shmokes said for himself.

Look up the definitions of journalism and satire.  A#1, there's absolutely no reason that the two would be mutually exclusive.  B#2, it would be crazy to suggest that the Daily show does not fall clearly into the primary definition of journalism.  We can have a debate about whether he makes a good journalist, but being hilarious simply does not preclude you from delivering the news.

Chad isn't willing to split up the parts of the show. He can only judge it in its entirety. THat said, let's spell it out for him...

The SKITS are comedy.

The INTERVIEWS are as legitimate as any interview. I'd say even more legitimate than some pap you see on CNN (*cough*Larry King*cough*).

The commentary, you could argue is a mix. It uses sound bites, which can easily be taken out of context, so I would hope no one relies on those bits as their sole source of news, but rather as a starting point. (ie: Read up more on what they brought up).

NO MORE!!

The skits are not just comedy.  They are usually exposés.  Again, being funny does not preclude something from being news.

Otherwise, exactly!   ;D

The only reason it falls anywhere near the definition of journalism is because true journalism no longer exists.  It has been replaced by, at best, pure advocacy journalism and at worst flat advocacy.  The Daily Show isn't good journalism - it just hasn't fallen as far as most of the rest of the "news".

Sadly I can't think of a single news source today that would have been seen as more than a tabloid 30 years ago.  Every reporter, on TV, the net, or in print, is looking to BE the story in one way or another, and that has thoroughly destroyed journalism as a whole.

Yes, but with a very clear bias/agenda.

Guys, this is heading into P & R territory.

Yes, absolutely.  Ripping someone a new one in no way falls into the "who what where when how why" roots of journalism.  It falls squarely into opinion and advocacy - it may be editorial but it's not journalism even by the current loosened Webster definition of the word.

Oh no, Chad.  You clearly have not seen the clip in question.  That was effing journalism.  We're talking exposing the man not just as an airbag, but as a criminal.  We're talking never-before-seen footage of Cramer admitting to committing securities fraud, and asking Cramer right there for comment on the footage.  It was freaking magical.

Spoken like a guy who didn't see it. That was the most investigative piece of journalism I've seen on TV in a very long time, if not ever. Stewart called him out on his ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- and showed clips of Cramer doing things he lamb basted everyone else for doing then asked him about it. You could tell he (Cramer) thought it was going to be a fluff piece and he got caught with his pants down.

This was in no way a clip. It was a solid 15 minutes and at no point was there joking around. I will give Cramer credit, he took it like a man and didnt just get up and leave. Schmokes described it perfectly, it was nothing short of magical. I would advise you to look for the segment then reply back and find some sort of excuse to not call it journalism. I haven't seen the NYTimes piece yet but now that I'm home from work I will be watching it.

EDIT:after seeing the piece that wasnt stewart ripping the times, that was more satire but at the same time did give you their perspective on the NYTimes. So I'd say it was more of a satirical opinion piece then "news" and/or journalism

EDIT2: For chad,
http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/?searchterm=cramer&searchtype=site&searchtype=site
results #6,7,and 8  though I would suggest the UNEDITED version a little further down the page  #10,11, and 12
