Arcade monitor whining (Videocolor VNS2025)
« on: June 08, 2009, 09:29:46 am »
My MAME arcade cabinet (New Games N'Styl 25) came with an arcade montior but no eletronics (chassis, neckboard, etc). The monitor is a Videocolor VNS2025 25", and I replaced the eletronics with an Intervideo chassis / parts. Everything works fine, very nice image - no complaints there. The problem is the chassis emits, every now and then (but very often) a high pitched whine. This whine can range from barely audible / background noise to extremely annoying. If I leave the arcade running I can hear this whine very clearly (and annoyingly) from other rooms in the house.

But it comes and goes, for whatever reason. The intensity of this whine changes in function of what is displayed on screen, it seems, as yesterday while re-installing Windows, as the screen kept changing resolutions the pitch of the whine kept changing. But the thing is, just as suddenly as it started it can stop. What bothers me is that, apart from this whine, the screen runs pretty well for an old arcade CRT !

Videocard is an ArcadeVGA, running Windows XP and Maximus Arcade. And I'm in France.

Here is a photo of the chassis : http://pics.imagup.com/04/1244391516_-1.jpg

I can take photos of the actual monitor / installation if needed. Or record a video / sound byte of the whine.

Thank you in advance for any help you may offer !

It might help to do two things:

- read wiki, especially the part linked in me sig, aye, to understand about scan rates an all

- at least for informational purposes, google or/and search here under 'monitor whine'.

could be changing loads on the smps .

another VERY annoying thing would be "singing" components .
usually xformers . but, can be be associated with any component
using audible frequencies.....

use hot glue / silicone rubber / rubber-plastic wedges ...whatever works and maintaining safety  !

Thank you QRZ, I'll try wedges / glueing down the components, see if it makes a difference.
