pc monitor problem - cuts half of screen out
« on: June 06, 2009, 01:15:50 am »
I have a 19" Medion MD 1998 OF CRT monitor mounted in my MAME cabinet.  This monitor replaced an old arcade monitor, and has been mounted using the metal frame and board that the arcade monitor was using.  Lately when I have been playing, the bottom half of the screen will cut out at random.  It seems to be a bad connection, because if I lift the CRT board slightly, it goes away, and then comes back if I put it back down.  This might be a silly question, but how is the board connected to the monitor itself?  Is it a wire, solder, or a combo?  I'm pretty green when it comes to monitors in general, so bear with me.  Here is a pic of the monitor mounted in the cab.  There is cardboard under the board to separate the board from the metal frame.

Thanks for your help!

Let me add a couple of screenshots to this to better show what is happening.  Basically, it usually cuts out the top half of the screen, then after some wiggling, it will go back to full screen again.  This is from Ms. Pac Man.

If it goes away when you flex it, it's a couple of things:

1) bad solder joint.  Narrowing it down will be the tricky part.  Of course you could just redo them all.

2) bad connection somewhere else.   Cable or something.  Goes along with #1.

Thanks for the reply.

Ok, I understand the solder part, but the part I'm confused by is the cabling, how does the board connect to the CRT itself?  I'm sure this is common knowledge, but I can't seem to find it anywhere...  I assume there are multiple cables to check?

I mean all those wires going on the monitor PCB to all the other parts of it.  One of them may be loose or something.  Try to narrow it down.

Ok, I'll see what I can find out, just need to find some time to take the monitor out!  I have it set pretty good right now, haven't had any problems for a couple of days, so I'll probably wait a bit.  Thanks for your help!

That's a weird one. If you're going to the trouble of removing it, you might just consider replacing it with a freebie off CL or Freecycle. Hell, if you were close, I'd give you a good one.

looks like this crt is is on its side ..... so, have a look in HORIZONTAL deflection.

since intermittent , it will surely be a poor connection.
