A good way to degauss?
« on: June 05, 2009, 01:29:03 pm »
Ok, making headway on the cab, small issues with the monitor yet, hoping there are some out there who may be able to help.

Now that I have a picture on the monitor, it is magnatized pretty badly (that's what has been explained to me). I have a screen that shows red on top, green in the middle and blue on the bottom. The green section gives you true colors of the screens, the blue and red sections offer colors different from what they should be. The easy answer is to allow the degauss coil to do the trick, however, this isn't really working. So I have to degauss the thing manually.

Reading up on this, there is the soldering gun method, magnets on a drill, cordless phone battery charger... the list goes on and on. I could also get a degausser from overseas, that is 7 days out. None of my dwindling local TV shops are interested in letting me use their unit for a few hours and offered 20 bucks.

Any ideas? I can order the wand, no issues, just wondering if there is something in my house that would do the trick?

Thanks.

Eric

Just to note - the soldering gun method would be one of the bigger ones, the kind you pull the trigger.
And you don't need "magnets" on a drill, just the drill. It's the alternating current from the motor that will create the magnetic field.

Also gotta ask if there are any kind of speakers or anything with magnets in them abnormally close to the monitor. Or tower speakers standing beside the cabinet, etc. (wanna weed that out before you try degaussing and get frustrated if it doesn't help)

Yup, understand with the soldering gun.

There are the original cabinet speakers that have magnets, I guess I could remove them and see if they are the culprit, but they didn't hurt the old monitor (It's a Guantlet Dark Legecy Cab) .

I'll check everything again, but I don't think there is anything around the monitor that has lot's of magnatism.

Is there a preferred way (drill, solder gun)?

Thank you.

Nah, the original ones shouldn't have any effect, you are correct there.
Just didn't know if this was a home built cab, had added monster speakers close to the monitor, etc. Have seen it happen before when people build their own cabinets and such. Or set some huge stereo speakers right beside their cab.

Prefered method also depends on which option you have handy.  ;)
If you have a drill handy..... give it a shot.
Hold the drill near the screen, fire it up and pull away from the screen. Sometimes it helps in a slight circular motion.

No matter what you use it always takes a bit of practice......even with a "degaussing wand", they aren't the miracle cure, it takes practice and technique.

Thanks Kevin.

I'll give it a try tonight.

I got the original speakers working again, closed my eyes and thought I was back at Aladdin's Castle! Opened my eyes and saw the magnetized screen and thought I was still there! Ha, Ha.

Let you know what happens.
