TMNT (converted to mk2) to Mame/Jukebox conversion
« on: June 02, 2009, 12:56:23 am »
Well, I've asked tons of questions and already started on this project, but I guess it might help some to show some pictures of the progress as I go.  I'll start off with a background.

Back in December, I picked up a junk cabinet from a putt-putt course down the street.  I've wanted to do a mame project since back in about 04 or so, but I was in 8th grade, didn't have the money, skills, resources, etc. so when I saw this, I figured it would be a great start.  After some research, it was built a TMNT cabinet but converted to mk2.

Condition/Problems:
-Marquee was punched out
-Monitor wouldn't turn on
-CP was kicked off
-Laminate was all cracked on sides

The thing was really a rag but it was the structurally strong.  After some toggling of plugging in all its connectors, I got it to boot up minus the screen.  After much searching and questioning on here (thanks!), i bought a cap and flyback kit from bob roberts.  Installed it and still no go.  After some searching, i found a zenith tv on craigslist for 25.  on a hunch, i bought it.  Amazingly, after opening it, it had the VERY SAME tube as in the monitor.  Tried swapping them and it was successful.  Now i had a fully working (except a few broken buttons) mk2 cab.  Then i started planning the mame build :).

Plans to highlight:
-Heineken Theme :)
-Car speakers and subwoofer for jukebox functionality
-4 player control panel with 22 Electric Ice RGB buttons, U-Trak Pearl RGB, and 4 Mag-stick Pluses
-Original 25" monitor to be used

I'll update this when i'm at home and with some pictures.

hey man,

if you end up maming this machine, what do you plan on doing with the harness? If it's a TMNT and in decent shape, I'd be glad to buy it off you :) Or I'd trade you for another jamma harness.

I'm restoring one now, but the jamma harness I have is pretty messy and spliced into. I'd like to keep this all original...

anyhoo, good luck! Can't wait to see some pics.

Didn't really have any plans for the harness.  All the buttons are soldered on though so i'll have to cut them off, but i can do so as close as possible to the buttons, then I'll post a picture of it up here and if you want it its yours :)

ALRIGHT! about time for an update!

So let me ATTEMPT to outline what i've done so far, I'm not very good with logging my projects....
let me please first warn you, some of these are really poor cell pics, so bare with me, they're mainly for representation.

Cosmetic:
I WORKED this machine over...  It had some sort of counter top laminate over the original artwork when it was converted to MK2.  Unfortunately, it had managed to crack all the way down the side...

Using a crowbar, rubber mallet, and patience, I peeled it all off after unsuccessful attempts to hide the crack.  Then I took a flat blade razor and peeled off the original turtles artwork (it was beyond messed up from the laminate glue).

Then took the belt sander to it and did my best to flatten out all the gashes in the surface that I then filled with a combo of wood filler and bondo.  All of this worked out pretty well for me not having any experience.  Then i primed and painted both sides.

Not bad huh?!  Just awaiting some artwork, which i'll wait till i finish the project to dump money into

On the backside and front side, i repainted some of the black.  The backside was sanded and completely repainted, but the front was touched up on the scratches with velspar satin black.  Actually matched original paint pretty well.  I then replaced all the t-molding.

(I included the untouched-at-the-time back panel for comparison, big difference!)

Computer:
Instead of using a computer case, I build a mounting plate from some left over sheet metal and standoffs.

This way, the motherboard gets all the air it needs inside the cabinet without the loss of the earth ground the case provides (i have a grounding braid going from the mounting plate to the psu.)

Got clever with the psu and mounted it with plastic straps that i think are used to hang ventilation.  Just unscrewed a few of the psu's case screws, attached them, and bolted them to the bottom of the cabinet.

I then bolted a drive holder i cut from an old computer case for the hard drive.  Worked out really well... If I decide to add a DVD drive, i'll have access through the coin door  8)

Also custom fabricated a little rig using one of the original cherry power switches to power on the PC. (Pic of this later)

Specs of computer:
-Intel Pentium E5200 2.5GHz Dual-Core Processor
-ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler
-OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 Dual Channel
-GIGABYTE GA-EP43-UD3L ATX Intel Motherboard
-CORSAIR 400W Power Supply
-Western Digital Caviar 500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
-ArcadaVGA card hooked into the original monitor (really like the vga break out cable they offer by the way, didn't expect it to plug right into the monitor board like it did)

Marquee: Replaced the fixture with something a little custom since it was making a lot of noise.  Mounted a piece of scrap mdf behind where the marquee would sit and mounted 6 cold cathodes that will come on when the power supply is booted.

Control Panel:  Ah... now heres the main project  ;D The original was just all sorts of mess.  Bunch of non-working buttons including some on the joysticks, and only 2 players. The joysticks and everything were in there, I was just poking around so i removed them.

I redesigned one with 4 players with a trackball

  ...SUPA re-enforced....   :dizzy:

...and even entirely detachable so its easy to move (I'm a college student so it'll probably see a few different apartments in the next few years).

Having the overlay made soon and should be finishing this up soon.  OH, and changed the theme to miller lite  :lol

Other little things:
-Swapped the twisty feet things for casters
-swapped all the locks
-tweaked coin doors a bit to work better, a sort of tune up
-I cut the connector out of an old power supply so I never have to worry about a dragging cord.  Actually killed two birds with one stone, I cut the cable coming from the power strip in half, on the half coming from the strip i soldered the connector, the other side that would plug the strip into the wall was soldered to the end of my monitors power supply.... maybe the pics will explain better...

Where I need help:
I really need help finding a solution to audio.. Originally I intended to use car speakers because of the quality and output, not to mention its just a matter of punching the speaker holes and mounting them from the outside.  Because of a budget change though, I'm looking for something cheaper.  Also, since its a conversion project, i can't really mount the speakers from the inside, so I need a solution where i can mount the speaker from the outside.  Any suggestions?  The original speaker still works great and I'm more than willing to use that, but i'm having trouble finding an 8 ohm 10w amplifier or something similar to power it.  Right now its plugged into the motherboard directly and it sounds good, but WAY too quiet.  Any help?

Why not just pick up a pair of cheap speakers and use the sub to power your original speakers?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010370060+1090608149&QksAutoSuggestion=&Configurator=&Subcategory=60&description=&Ntk=&CFG=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=
hmm, I'm a little confused... Wouldn't that only cause the low bass frequencies to be pushed out the speaker then? and see, I don't want to buy a set of speakers that i find out are built for being mounted inside.  I had 2 sets of speakers that were potentials for the project but both of them would have needed to be mounted from the inside just the way they were shaped, and I'm avoiding that at all costs

Update also, got a video of the boot up now! my iPhone came today!  ;D

With the speakers I linked to the base unit would push out the audio to your already built in speakers.

I have two 6x9's (car speakers) in my cab and they are fed by a computer sub woofer connected to my computer via a digital cable (analog would work fine).

what i did was disassembled a set of amplified pc speakers.  threw away the actual speakers and connected some car speakers to the amp.  it worked great

hmm, really? I wouldn't think an amp from computer speakers would be nearly powerful enough but I guess they probably do sell some in the 10-20 watt range, i'll check that out... THANKS!

Yeah I ordered 2 sets of Cold tubes with two lights each. It was so crazy bright behind my MVS Neo Geo marquee that I now just run only one of them.

hahaha! yeah.... i kinda didn't expect that...  It's REDICULOUSLY bright... I'll probably just end up unplugging a few.  I also considered since i'll be having a few led wiz's running that maybe i could incorporate the marquee with 3 "brightness" levels

Update time.

The good:
My overlay and template came in today and the material is amazing, my artwork turned out great

the bad:
due to mishandling by the postal service (could be just poor rolling before packaging too, but i'm not here to point fingers), I'm pretty sure the wrinkles in the cpo are permanent and it's ruined  :banghead: just gotta wait for scott to get back to me and see what to do about this  :soapbox:

Good news. New CPO came in today and it looks great.  Long weekend of work though so update on Monday most likely with pictures of the control panel build.

No real pics to post yet, just prep painting the control panel for overlay and some internal junk.. but I did come across some decent old computer speakers around my house and gutted them for the cabinet and everything worked out pretty nicely.  In practice though, something is not right and I can't seem to figure it out... They're both mounted at the original speaker hole since they're only about 1"x2" a piece so it's hard to tell which speaker sound is coming from if thats the issue, but it sounds as though i'm missing some audio somewhere. I ran the speaker test that visibly shows which speaker is being used and on both tests, both speakers are working properly.  When I run the emulator though, I'm missing some sound effects, basically the effect you get when you're outputting stereo sound and you either have a mono speaker plugged in or a set of speakers half plugged in.  One sound effect in particular, if it helps diagnose this, is the coin sound on the simpsons, which sounds just fine when the original speaker is plugged directly into the sound card.  Any ideas?

Damn! I got a lot accomplished on the control panel today... lets see...
-finally attached hinge
-attached latches
-applied cpo
-cut holes in cpo
-layed t-molding
-layed plexi
-installed trackball, joys, and start buttons

just gotta order all the buttons and wire it up and she'll be in playing shape!

still yet to do otherwise:
-some computer work to remove windows screens
-finish marquee design and have printed
-install more games
-play till my hands fall off
