my cab **new pics, going back together with it**
« on: July 05, 2003, 10:38:12 pm »
here is mine. it is based of lusids plans. but only so i have some base dimensions. pretty much everything has been changed.
these were done in maya so i could see it as i designed it rather than just graphing it out and cutting away.

the full cab pic :
the middle shelf is adjustable height (dowels like a bookshelf), the top shelf slides out (like a keyboard tray on a desk).
i dont feel like skinning it all so its grey here, but the cab will be black.

CP pic:
here is the biggie. 1st question... yes... those are cupholders :D. 2nd question... the split you see for the outside players is yes, you guessed it... removeable.
here, the color is right, the CP will be a deep purple. all buttons, trackball, and spinner will be black.

and it will actually be built just like this. i have it all drawn out on the MDF. will be cutting it tomorrow.
also, there are several things not in the model, you will only get to see in finished pics. saving the bigger cool factor for last :p.

I just noticed this project. My CP design started out exactly like this. As a matter of fact. I had all intentions of cutting off the ends even once it was built untill I decided that if I did not like it or if it did not work out, I would be out all that time I put into it.

Few things to think about.

I don't know how exactly your plans match what you are actually going to build but.

Player 3 and 4 are not going to be able to see the screen. Maybe some of it but not all of it.

How have you decided to connect the outter pieces? The best that I could come up with was to use steel dowels almost the length of the middle CP and have these slide into steel tubes that we mounted in the middle portion of the CP.  Then uses latches in the back to keep it there. The dowel and the tubes would have to match real close to keep down play but it would work.

wow, i got some more replies ;D.

my mom said the same thing (she is good for checking ideas with ;).
its really hard to tell from the pics, but what you have to imagine, or if you have a cab walk up to it and put your hands on like you are playing it. notice how for you stand back. then, look at my pic, and realize that your head/eye height is just under the notches of the sides (me anyway, im 5'7") or about 6" under the marquee for me. once you account for that the visibilty is for all intents perfect. although with my mums tip, i do want a 27" TV later on (25" now) and since it will be wider, i cut a 1" notch from the bottom angle (top of CP) up to the same curve point. and it even looks more arcade authentic too. i'll go ahead and toss up a new pic. the notch is the same angle as the CP. and is flush (w/ t-molding in) with top of CP. thats the only thing i changed about the initial design.

the removeable.... i'll just save that for some finished pics :P.
but i'll say my goal was for you to look at the cab, see a 2P panel, and have no idea more will go onto it. pure stealth 8)

anyway.... the cab is built. CP is cut. im just waiting for my happ stuff to get here and the laminate. i dont want to unveil a naked cab :o. and i have some other surprises i want to wait for.

oh ya, 1 other thing. the CP will no longer be purple :(. i am a purple nut. the only thing i made --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- was a table top CP. i had the nintendo gamecube purple paint matched for it. i so love that color. but there is not a close laminate color and i dont want lexan this time. so the CP will be wilson art pewter brush.

Ok, this looks like a mix of the X-arcade pratical cab with silkstick cp!  :)

Man, you should be working with them, great idea!  :)

Just one more thing, don't stop tweaking it now, hang in there and probably you will be clamed as a reference to a lot of newbies on the scene!  :)

night,

That is the coolest 4 Player design I've seen.  I've thought of making the 3rd and 4th player removeable, but how did you do it.  I'm afraid one of my drunken buddies would bust it off.  Would you or could you make the plans available??  Alls I have to say is great work....I can't wait to see the finished cab.

thanks.
its somewhat on hold for a bit. i got a dead ipac :(. but andy is cool and he is exchanging it and even offered to refund return shipping.
i guess that gives me time to actually cut the CP. i was waiting for the lam still and just wanted to play the thing. now i have my lam and cant play anyway.

removeable panels here i come.....

ive got most of the wiring done. after i wire the cut 3&4, i will have used nearly 240feet of wire. but im not exposing the secret yet :P.
gonna work on some cool lighting too. i always go overboard in designing things.

ok, my first pic. you can thank the ppl in the 'anti-big CP' thread.
this is only the CP for now.
and yes, i did nix the removeable idea. but not cuz it wasnt feasible, but several small things. me and my roommate are getting a house and the space isnt a problem now, we actually will be getting plenty of use out of the 4, and im getting a bit burnt out on this project since ive been going at it so long. but i still think it looks good.

only thing not done is 3 and 4 start buttons. and i desperatly need those white on black ones

and note that its hard as hell to get a good shot with the thing mounted. i was standing on a stool with the camera against the ceiling. its not looking straight down.

Nice and clean :)

This is an example of how 4 player panels should be made.
As long as the end players (3&4?) can see the screen

I agree with the other discussion about people wanting to put hundreds of controls on a single panel being a bad idea, but this shows a nice way of doing it without going overboard.

and what are the holes used for? some surprise maybe?

hmm how come only 2 cup holders on a 4 player cp?  Which I think is awesome btw.  I would have liked to see the removable 3 and 4 player in real tho :-/  ahh well it's still cool.  what's the finished width of this monster?

Night,

First off that control panel is awesome.   :o  Could you share how you were going to attach the removable sides?  Also what are the dimensions of that bad boy if you don't mind me asking.

well, with the angle, from tip to tip it is 59 wide. but it plays very well and the outside can see everything. i promise. weve been playing a lot of NBA Jam. and i dont believe it destroys the look of the cab. it still looks clean.
i will finish up the removeable in maya tonight so i can show you how i was gonna do it.

and 4 cup holders would have been very cluttered. as they are now, it makes a nice part into the design. even he didnt know exactly what they were. which is a good sign.
and while i am kinda let down myself by not doing the removeable, there are several more things that will surprise you even more than that ;D

Hi night,

The panel looks great. The wiring is nice and tidy. A great job!

I was looking at your speaker installation. Can you provide me (us) with more details about it? Are those car speakers? If they are normal speaker drivers, what did you do for a crossover? What are you using to drive them?

Also, the magnetic sheilding looks different that what I've seen before. It looks like an open steel box. Is it effective?

I have a pair of small 20 year old 3-way bookshelf speakers that I've gutted and want to put in my cab. The problem is that they are not magnetically shuilded so I can't get them close to monitor without huge problems. I've looked into bucking magnets but I'd have to order them from PartsExpress. Did you build those steel boxes?

Thanks.

from Directron. which is local for me. was about 30 bucks i believe.
i wont be keeping it there though. it will be mounted to a drawer rail and will come up from behind the glass and rotate around to be a few inches above the CP.
