When is it really worth it to enable D3D?
« on: July 05, 2003, 07:29:09 pm »
just wondered when is it actually good to use? i use it with KI and thats about it.
when is it a good idea to enable it? should i always have it enabled? and if so whats the best
settings? i'v been running with it off since i figure most games dont take advantage of it at all.
i really like Rampage World tour tho, and it seems pretty buggy. i was thinking maybe D3D would
help? any thoughts or ideas on the overall use of D3D in MAME??

My future cab runs on a 1.3ghz processor and KI lags a bit.  If I set frameskip to 2 it helps but still not the greatest.

In what ways is Rampage buggy?  Got mine working pretty good.  Had to turn off Auto-Framerate deal cuz it was lagging for some reason.  Using Direct Draw for this as well.

You can use D3D to stretch the games to fit the screen instead of hwstretch, which has blurry filtering.  The downside to D3D stretching is that is sometimes looks 'shimmery'.

Here is the deal with the d3d option.... yes it does do filtering and stuff but there is a more important reason it was added.

Certain games are using d3d to manage the textures and thus it speeds up rendering, particularly on games that have a lot of tiles that are quickly flipped.  The problem is you don't know which games are using it.  Roadblasters is like 100% better when d3d is on.  Other games I'm not so sure.

ok cool i'll try enabling it on slower games.
also goldenbear doesnt KI run better for you with Frameskip set to 0?
i tried setting it to 1,2,3 and stuff and seemed to run better at 0, i've also
heard ppl saying this before. mines on a 1.3ghz and runs almost 100% on 0
and as for rampage world tour, i dunno i think its just a bug in the roms. it seems
to freezes at times when i finish a level and just hang there with the music playing.

I also have this problem of the game freezing and the music continues to loop.  Not sure if it is at the end of the level though.
