Craigslist humor
« on: May 28, 2009, 10:10:00 am »
At first I thought this was serious until I got to the end.  :laugh2:

Classic machines are appreciating in value. Use this hurting economy as a chance to invest!

Asteroids - Not the original cabinet. Was a Donkey Kong, then a Tetris, then someone took the guts of an Asteroids (monitor, PCB, control panel) and shoved it in there. But, it's still a classic. Painted bright green. Not working. $1700

Ms.Pac-Man - This sat outside for 5 weeks underneath a gutter drain. No boards, but monitor is there. No monitor glass. Buy a new PCB, control panel, monitor glass (aforementioned), wiring harness, some new particle board, and you'll have a working if not pretty classic. $1895

Arkanoid - In an old Zaxxon cabinet. Working, but needs new capacitors on the monitor (wavy image). Water damage at bottom and on sides. This thing was earning $1.25 per week at the last location, so you're looking at a potential gold mine. $1900

Q*Bert - No PCB, no monitor, no control panel, no power supply, no marquee, no wiring harness. Works. $1500

Altered Beast - Fully working. A golden age classic (in a Joust cabinet). Serious offers over $2000 only, please

Street Fighter II - Cigarette burns on control panel. Very dirty. Has been in local auction warehouse for three months, and hasn't sold yet. Power cord cut. Monitor has Frogger burn-in. All fighting games are worth big $$$$. $2195

Ironman Stewart's Off Road - This machine weighs next to a ton. You'll need at least four people to move it out of my basement, because I won't help you. Steering wheels don't work. Popular at parties, but not social gatherings. $1899

Multiple game machine - in a Dragon's Lair cabinet. With a Pentium II computer, 15" flat screen monitor, arcade-style (sorta) joystick set inside a wooden drawer, power strip at bottom of cabinet, and a paper "My Home Arkade Matchine" marquee that took at least 45 minutes and Paintshop to make. Plays thousands of games, but sometimes you have to turn your head sideways `cause the monitor doesn't rotate. Uses MAME and Windows Millennium Edition. $3800

Donkey Kong - Pristine classic! ALL ORIGINAL! New repro control panel, new repro monitor glass, repro marquee, repro side art, new paint on cabinet, new modern joystick installed, no coin mechs (free play), new JAMMA Donkey Kong board installed. ALL ORIGINAL! $2395

Tempest - In the rare mini/cabaret cabinet. Game is in beautiful shape, with intact wood grain and no damage whatsoever. The original vector monitor, control panel, and PCB were also in phenomenal shape when I got the game, but the good news is that I've already put in a new piece of sheet metal and new controls on the panel, installed a raster monitor, and UPGRADED the game with a 48-1 PCB! All the hard work is done. $2495.

Prices are firm - I don't haggle. Any machine made from 1978 onward is still a potential earner; therefore, it is worth its original selling price (but usually more). I shop out all working machines from top to bottom with Windex and paper towels before sale. None of these machines actually exist or are for sale, but the prices and conditions of the games are pretty typical for what old operators and game room business con artists are trying to pass off as gems.

Nevermind. That was from someone I know (only by their internet name) who replied after I showed them.

I'll try to post the legit ones if I get any...

From Fred Leopold:

I'm sitting here laughing ---my bottom--- off at what you're asking for this crap...  Keep it comin'

If you sell any of these, then I'm going to leave mine outside for a little water damage, too!  lol

I guess he sent that part before he finished reading, because a few minutes later I got a follow-up....

If you were in Tulsa, I would have thought that you were talking about Galaxy something or other.  They would sell you a tempest for somewhere under $2,000 and without any kind of warranty!  And they wonder why I've never bought anything off of them.  lol

I understand your frustration.  I'm trying to add a few more games to my collection sometime in the future.

Except a little truncated, so the joke is more likely seen. I stopped reading after the third item, cos obviously it was a bunch of ludicrousness.

It's related, but not the actual post. I think the key point in seeing the humor here is the photo that's included with the posting and the final keyword phrase. I actually thought this was the real deal until I spotted the keywords. I've including it all here for posterity.

Mint Arcade Machine includes keys - $3000 (Fair Oaks)
Date: 2009-06-06, 2:27PM PDT

100% working highly collectible arcade machine. I believe it plays Street Fighter 2. Only many thousands made so it is very rare and valuable and highly sought after. Made at the factory out of plywood and not cheap particle board. This machine has been in a private collection since it was built. It is like new with very little wear on it. Side art looks brand new. The game functions perfectly, all sounds and controls work. Screen is not working, just needs a fuse. Includes keys and 0.25 cent coin mechs so you can put it in your business and start making money right away. Currently set on free play. I bought this from a private collector just 6 months ago paid $6k. Wife wants it out of the bedroom since all I do is play it. She says that's why I have no job anymore. I think it was the economy. Need to sell to pay rent. Asking only $3000 dollars bucks. I have a bad back so you'll have to move it yourself. It's on the second floor as you can see in the pictures. Will upload a picture of it later. Please look at all the hi-res pictures I have included and you can see how nice this machine is.

Keywords: pinball, skee-ball, ms pac man, galaga, highly magic valuable, one born every minute

Are Craigslist-Arcade-for-sale posters considered a group of people who qualify for stereotyping? Because that is the ultimate CLAFS stereotype! It has it all, right down to the picture. I don't know why this stuff amuses me so much.  :laugh2:

I love the ones that go something like:

Pinball for sale

I have a pinball machine for sale, I think it was made in the 80s. Leave message, emails will not be returned.

I'm sure they get a boatload of responses.

who rickrolls people still? you could have at least sent them to lemon party or something. I recognize the URL, if I recall correctly you get rickrolled, webpage window moves around, you cant get out of the dialog box loop and you get free spyware on your system too; pass.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Here you go:

http://stlouis.craigslist.org/fuo/1239825383.html

First of all, they don't list the title. I'm assuming from the ---smurfy--- quality pictures that it is NNG, but not positive. Second, what book are they going from that the "book value" is $2700? And thanks for cutting us a break by knocking the asking price down to $2400.
