question about side art, and panel art...
« on: July 04, 2003, 10:16:05 am »
i bought a used cab, and its got a big Super Masters (golf game) side art thing on both sides of the machine.  how do i go about getting that off?  would a razor be the best way?  im not trying to perserve it, just get it off so i can either paint it or put on my own side art, havent decided yet.  but whats the best way to get it off.  also, i see a lot of people putting contact paper on their cp's, the black marble kind.  i know EVERYBODY uses that, but its my first cab, and thats easy right now.  where do you guys get that color of contact paper?  i went to lowes and they had flowers and a white marble that didnt look very good to me.  where can i go to get the black marble??

Unless you're covering your control panel with plexi you don't want to use that contact paper. It doesn't hold. And you SERIOUSLY don't want to use it for the sides of a machine. This is coming from someone who has used it. It will peal right back off. Plus it's only like 1.5 or 2 feet wide so you would have to apply it in stripes.  :P Forget that!

well im going to put lexan over the top when i get it all finished so that would take care of holding it down.  if contact paper doesnt work, then what is the best thing to use?  what does everybody use then?  also, no one told me how to get off the sideart from the original cab.  suggestions on both of these issues?

I'm still not sure how to get the vinyl off of mine so I'll let you know what I come up with.

As for the black marble contact paper, you can find that at Home Depot for like $5 for more than you'll EVER use. Better alternatives, though, are real artwork or (if you don't use lexan) formica or vinyl. Vinyl and formica both offer a tough surface so you wouldn't need the lexan. Vinyl applies like the contact paper would except it's MUCH more heavy duty. Formica comes in a stiff sheet that can be cut to the proper shape and glued down.

You can get formica at Home Depot, but the vinyl would probably have to be bought online since it's a bit rare in adhesive sheets.

Did that help at all???

yes very much so.  the less construction and cutting of stuff i dont know about (lexan for instance :) )  the better!  so about this formica and vinyl stuff, will this give my cp a good protective coating?  if i dont have to buy lexan, thats good, i just want something on top of the wood that will look good.  what do you think is my best bet?
