Getting KI/KI2 at good speed? and Cruisin Games?
« on: July 03, 2003, 09:53:06 pm »
just wondering how you all got Killer Instict 1 & 2 Running good? i'v tried FastMAME and it seems to do nothing.
tried normal mame, and MAME32 still not that great performance, i have KIAME but it wont seem to run? i have the CHD and not the img file that may be the issue, but i point to the CHD and it seems to start loading then dies!

im running:
1.333ghz @266FSB AMD Athlon
512megs PC133 Ram
Geforce 3 Ti200
Windows98SE

any ideas? its the same deal with Cruisin USA and Cruisin World they also run like crap, i'd like to get them going also.

Well forget about crusin games.  They need a 3 gig or higher to run flawlessly.

As for ki you should be getting decent performance for ki and slightly worse for ki2.  Hope that helps.

You might want to play cruisin world on an emulator optimized for 3d games.

An N64 emulator for example will probably run it flawlessy on your rig.

hmm my KI 1 runs playable, but KI 2 is like 30-37FPS average and sometimes much worse.
and the sound its VERY buggy. anyone else get these issues? i always hear ppl saying they have it running
perfectly and at about 45-50ish FPS sometimes 60 and thats on lower power systems.

anyone wanna share they MAME settings? or there MAME32 Rom specific settings?
do you use D3D? and if so what 3d settings do you use?

You may want to follow my strategy for running those games full speed.

Play the other 4000 games in Mame first. By the time you finish a computer that can run them fast will be cheap.

I will never understand the morbid fascination people have with trying to play the 10 games in Mame that need incredibly fast computers, even though the other 4000 games will run on a 500 mhz with speed to spare.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Well it just so happens that KI is my favorite game, so getting it working is a big deal for me. I've got it working full speed with KIAME on my p3 @ 866 MHz. The sound gets out of line sometimes, but I've been working on ways to fix it.

In response to an earlier post, you do need the ki.img file, not the ki.chd (or whatever) file.

I also really like Cruisin' USA, but I doubt I'll be able to get that one going any time soon so I'm not holding my breath. I know they can be run at full speed, just not through MAME. Cruisin' uses about the same hardware as KI and I can get that running full speed.

MAME is going to run those games slow because it doesn't optimize for speed. It merely "documents". If I knew how to code I'd work on getting some of those other games going, but I'm not that knowledgable.

that was very helpful....honestly i didnt ask for a sarcastic remark, im trying to get one of my favorite games running. and iam running it on a fast system...i just guess its not fast enough...it runs full speed on my 2ghz laptop i use for work and stuff but im not going to use that to play it in my cab setup. so i guess i will play it on my laptop until i find a cheap system. only reason i asked is because i have seen many posts with ppl running it full speed like Alan has up above, also i didnt say i was just trying to get it running in MAME i also asked about other emulators such as KIAME and how they got it running, and i now have that answer. i need the .img and not the CHD. so all in all i would say it was worthy to be posted.

now Alan do you know if theres a way to convert the CHD to the IMG? i know you can convert the img to the CHD with a patcher out there.

hdcomp -extract input.chd output.raw

change the chd to match whatever and output to match what you want.

I never converted from CHD to IMG. I downloaded the IMG directly before it became available in MAME. Ever since then it's been really hard to find anything except the CHD file. Even the place where I found it before now only has the CHD. (Don't worry, yall. I'm not gonna go telling where I found it before...)

The suggestion above seems like a viable one, tohugh. Never tried cuz I never needed to. I'm looking for the IMG for KI2, though. I hear that extracting it from a CHD is particularly tricky for some reason or another. Any of yall know anything about this? I don't understand the directions on Tourniquet's site.

The u64 emulator isn't as accurate as mame though... it's quite glitchy and the computer's timing is off.

Mind you for now it's your best bet, but it's no where near like playing ki/ki2 in the arcades.  In mame it is, but you need a 2 gig pc to run em ;)

I don't even have a 1GHz PC, let alone a 2GHz. That will be the focus of my next upgrade. Those few games that some people say aren't worth the fast PC are the same games I really want to play. Those new Nebula games don't run so well on this thing, either.
