Big Buck Hunter PC version- lag towards end of game
« on: April 27, 2009, 07:16:22 pm »
I have the PC version installed on my cabinet and I'm getting lag on Call of the wild towards the end of a game. By lag I mean pull the trigger and there is a delayed reaction. I am trying to work out if its a hardware issue or a bug in the game. I have had this on the original game as well

Setup
P4 Pentium 3 ghz 1 gig ram- 2 topgun 2's with an arcade monitor.Running Mala as the FE. Heaps of HDD space and task manager reports about a 250mb swap file in play.

OK no takers. I'm using a nocd  hack and I suspect this may be causing the issues. I have a legitimate copy but no cd player in the cab

I'll close my own thread >:D. I realised that the game is designed to run with a big ole shotgun with a pump action. Now if you use a Topgun with the side button mapped to reload you can ah machinegun those deer.... I don't think this is what the makers intended. I've noted that if I fire and reload at normal speed for a shotgun then no lag :banghead:

So if I play the game the way it was intended no problem

*UPDATE* no there is still an issue. The game lags still and I suspect its the nocd mod thats done it will advise

I also have the same issue, even by running the game from the cd. My pc's specs are nearly the same as yours, but I have an arcadevga w/act labs gun. I notice the delay when there's slowdown (when there are more deer on screen than usual), so my guess is that it's a pc and/or vid card performance issue even though our pcs surpass the recommended specs. I think that if the game had some graphics options like reducing the graphic quality or resolution (although the game's running in 640x480), it'd improve the problem. Just my theory though.

Thanks for the feedback. So even running from the CD has the same problem- damn. I think it is a DirectX issue but as I think this game requires 9.0c we don't have any option apart from Directx 10 which in my experience is slower. As you say some graphics options would help

I also ran a test on a much faster machine- Pentium core duo 2.8 with a powerful graphics card and planty of ram- and saw stagger in the Canadian map on BBH4. I put it down to the no cd .exe's I was using but it sounds like the game has issues.

So in conclusion the PC game just sux. Along with the changes to it (unlimited ammo and crosshairs) it also staggers. Bring on emulation

Hey Swamprat96,

I didn't think of the DirectX possibility, but mine is 9.0c. After some testing, I found a good amount of shot delay occurs in the darker scenes. I like the game besides that issue. I never played the original arcade game (tried BBH: Safari though), but doesn't the arcade have unlimited ammo? I agree that it'd be nice to have an option to turn off the crosshair. BBH: Safari has a small circular flash where you shoot, but it doesn't stay onscreen like the pc's crosshair. I don't think they thought that players would use pc guns. BTW, how do your TopGuns perform on this game and others? Are they accurate? There is a program made for Act Labs light gun games called "Troubleshooter" that allows you to disable the cursor, but BBH is not supported. Perhaps it'd work w/your TopGun? I messing w/the files in BBH to see if it'd get rid of the cursor, but w/no luck so far. A patch from Midway would be nice.

Regards

Its not your gun or your computer it is part of the game in order for you to ---simply the best thing ever--- the deer in the last site you have to do a shooting trick called leading. Try shooting where the deer will be in a sec or two not where it is at that moment.

I disagree since the gunshot sound can really lag after you pull the trigger, and the deer movements can become rather choppy. I'd see a deer pause in the middle of a stride, then "jump" to across the screen. In addition, this doesn't happen consistently on these sites; sometimes its worse than other times, at least on my PC.

I actually have problems in the Canada map mainly- light scenes! I find BBH1 is lag free but 2,3 and 4 get steadily worse in order. AThe topguns work fine but shoot low in BBH - all versions whereas they are spot on in mame

Yes I agree the lag is obvious- where you pull the trigger a few times and the round is over but you still get shots happening!
