Mame Games
« on: April 22, 2009, 06:13:30 pm »
So...  Are they making new arcade games still to this day?  And what is the scene like, are they available...Torrents...etc....Dont worry....Not asking where....Just curious...Like I would like to play Golden Tee 2006 2009  etc...Is that even POSSIBLE.  What is this pre 2001 thing?  I have the updated .130 rom sets....But I am kinda new to the scene and was wondering....Thanx

That's a loaded question  :)

This is my take on the situation:

Then a game is no longer being manufactured or is no longer popular in arcades, only then will it be considered to be added to MAME.   Many people have mentioned a "3 year rule" which is a good guideline - but not gospel.

The reason MAME does not immediately document newer games is twofold:
1) You avoid harming the profits of arcade companies, especially if a game is still in production.
2) Lessen the probability of legal problems if a game owner decides to take action against MAMEDEV.

Remembering too, above all, MAME is a documentation project - not a game machine, also keeps things in perspective.

Yeah, I agree with Tafoid, with one modification.

When a hardware system is no longer being manufactured or is no longer popular in arcades... yadda yadda....

See, once a given system is emulated in mame, it usually is very easy to add another game with the same hardware.  MameDev ran into that a lot with NeoGeo games, and don't want a repeat.

For example, a new Golden Tee game came out pretty much each year from 1995 to 2000, but all were on the same hardware.  So even though GT '97 & GT 3D (a 1995 game)) weren't being sold in 2000, the hardware still was, so mamedev stayed away from emulating those two.
