The DEATH METAL thread
« on: March 18, 2009, 07:20:27 pm »
I've been thinking about this for a little while, and after again coming across the vid below, decided why the hell hot?

Arguably, the pinnacle of death metal, in band, album, and song. Hail Chuck Shuldiner (as far as it goes, anyway) and company:

Massacre... Kam Lee fronted Florida Death circa early 1990's.  Good ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---!

Some seriously oldschool footage (1986!) of Massacre...not the best quality but you gotta love the vintage stuff!

I can't find what I want on youtube - but, arguably the last word (and one of the most brutal voices) in death metal:

And notice the band is of mixed-race, showing that hip-hop and rap aren't everything.

And, perhaps about as brutal as the Suffocation above...as well as showing hip-hop has other musical uses!

Dude...that CCorpse done Lounge style is hilarious.

Glen Benton was originally on vocals...not sure who this dude is,  but he sounds VERY much like Glen IMHO.

Hey, it's just a vocal technique, generally related to things like African fry and stuff. It's certainly not gender-specific - though it's easier for females with lower voices....unless they do the higher kind like that bassist in the Vital Remains vid. I can do a range - Carcass-like, grunt-growl, yell-growl. They were pretty weak, riff and drum-wise, though. Total old-school metal.

And today's offering, a tasty one from Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious :

uprightbass: I wouldn't consider any of those death metal. The first two are basically thrash/speed metal with scratchy vocals, and an emphasis on 'prog metal'-like minor keys. I haven't heard that Opeth before, and there's some mildly interesting harmonic elements in it, but it's still more in the vein of later White Zombie....and maybe King Diamond.

Though death metal is a sub-set of pop culture, pop cul in the mainstream is problematic because it fails to comprehend things outside of it, and then just mashes them together - like on that Friends episode where they called Carcass....heavy metal.  That's like calling Metallica 'hard rock' - except they're ---smurfing--- ---meecrobs--- themselves because they not only allow it, they embrace it. Well.

Well, Nile is the only real Death Metal I listen to occasionally. I love fast technical music so why stop at DM when you can listen to good grindcore and noisegrind? One of the most excellent bands on planet Earth are The Kill fom Australia:

<sigh> As I've mentioned before, this whole 'technical' idea of pop culture's is about as substantive as the music it's meant to describe. Certainly playing quickly, with a lot of notes, is not remarkable. And it doesn't matter if it's some rock or metal 'shredder' or 'grind core'. It's the same ridiculousness.

Ewww, jesus, they really ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- up that Mortician recording by mixing in all that bass guitar. Have to say also that the whole 'scene intro' thing is about the same as a lot of doom. Just no.

That Necrophagia, musically, is just thrash metal. Now, Necrophagist, that's a somewhat different matter....although they still could do a lot more. Nile is similar but since they scoop the mids so heavily it doesn't really matter what they're playing. You can't hear it. Whereas at least with Necrophagist, you can hear everything.

Vis: by mainstream, I mean relative to the genre. Lots of bands have done world tours for years and were quite ugly sounding. Of course, even (or perhaps particularly) Chuck transcended the genre. Cynic certainly did, though they jumped the shark on their latest.

The gutteral vocals are done by Masvidal on the recording, but on tour (second below) they had a chick (also on keyboards) doing them.

Not entirely sure I got you what you were trying to say, but your posts come across as pretty arrogant. Quick and refined riffs are remarkable in themselves insofar as listening to this kind of music makes for quite an interesting abstract pleasure and besides, pushing the envelope is always a good thing. Of course, everyone who knows anything about music knows that technicality alone doesn't make a good song, but at least for DM and grindcore it's indispensable IMHO. Mind you, in my opinion; there's lots of people around that thoroughly enjoy the "three chords and a d-beat/ blast beat"-variety of grindcore & metal, and although I can't stand that boring ---Cleveland steamer--- I absolutely fail to see why it should be condemned just for its simplicity. In the same way, saying that playing as fast and as technical as possible is ridiculous is a ridiculous statement in itself.

Also, I'm having trouble taking your remarks about why it's super-important to keep DM and heavy metal and grindcore apart seriously. Who the hell cares what you call it as long as everyone knows what you're talking about? All that lecturing people about what is DM and what isn't accomplishes is to make you look like a nerd and a know-it-all.

I'd prefer it if we didn't have to have these kinds of theoretical/ "I know more about ---Cleveland steamer--- than you do"- discussions in a thread that's supposed to allow people to share the music they love. I certainly did not post the above video to impress people (you can't hear much of the riffs anyway, but if you're into "brutal" music, you have to admit the vocalist and the drummer absolutely slay) with my music listening skillz; indeed, I hoped that maybe there would be one or two people that would check out The Kill because they liked what they saw.

Do you mean when they play live? Because I can tell apart every single note on their albums. If I were a little quicker on the guitar I wouldn't have any problem at all tabbing their songs.

While I personally don't care for The Kill you might want to check out the band Emperor if you don't know about them already their last album Prometheus The Discipline of Fire & Demise was technically one of the best albums I have ever listened to I'm glad I got to see them live.

Cheers for the tip. Unfortunately, I'm not too much into BM (very often, BM bands exemplify everything that's ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about metal, i.e. trying way too hard to be grim and kvlt & taking itself so seriously, sterile production etc.), but I gotta admit Emperor has some cool harmonies. All in all not really my cup of tea though... not enough blast beats for my liking  ::)

Not any recording I've heard, and the severe majority have been studio recordings. Kinda like the early CC and Morbid Angel. Couldn't understand dick. Maybe you're listening on a system with little bass response, and at speaking levels?.....although loud or quiet, I couldn't discern anything. That's  what happens when you scoop the mids.

At risk of further perpetrating, I suggest you be careful when using the term 'listening skills'. Further, definitions and boundary conditions are useful in knowing what things actually are, vs what they mean only to you. In particular regard to your statements above, that's recursive, mind.

Nile is similar but since they scoop the mids so heavily it doesn't really matter what they're playing. You can't hear it. Whereas at least with Necrophagist, you can hear everything.

Do you mean when they play live? Because I can tell apart every single note on their albums. If I were a little quicker on the guitar I wouldn't have any problem at all tabbing their songs.

Well we'll just have to agree to disagree here. I have pretty much everything Nile has released on vinyl and on CD and I have listened to the stuff on many different stereos, loud, quiet, didn't matter, I never had any problem hearing exactly what they play. Haven't seen them live yet, friend of mine (he plays drums) saw them and said everything had been very crisp and clear. Anyways I'm used to the stuff that grind bands release, which mostly sucks sound-wise, so Nile has always been the most polished and clear noisy music I've listened to.

I suggest you be careful when using the term 'listening skills'. Further, definitions and boundary conditions are useful in knowing what things actually are, vs what they mean only to you. In particular regard to your statements above, that's recursive, mind.

Is there anything I should know about the expression "listening skills" (plz note: English is not my first language & I couldn't think of any other way to express what I was trying to express. Still probably not something a native speaker would say, but in my defense I have to say that I used quotation marks for that very reason...), the way you make it sound it feels like I inadvertently said something misogynistic or something....

As for the rest,  I just can't help remarking that from a linguistic perspective (yeah I know I sound pompous here) the notion that there is a direct connection between words/ definitions is at best problematic. Words & categories don't have any existence in themselves; they "mean" what everyone agrees about.

It's conceivable my hearing ability is such that I can't discern them. Though I generally prefer lower-pitched timbres, and have enjoyed various scooped mid bands' musics, I've always had trouble picking out exactly what was being played - even in Death's Human - especially the louder it was, until some time where I heard it on a smaller system with lower bass response and at lower or low volume.

No no. Just that people often don't have very much of them, inherently or/and because of their popcul education. And they probably would say it as you said it, case in point. Incidentally, I think your english is quite excellent.

They can. But I draw a line at things that are inconsistent or/and insubstantive. There are many words, or at least connotations of them, that simply aren't in my vocabulary. For me, words have specific definitions and connotations associated with them that are determined by functionality rather than social function.
