Shinjuku Incident
« on: April 22, 2009, 05:40:42 am »
It's been a while since i've posted any movie reviews. I've still been going, just not writing about them.

So, i was walking past a cinema and saw a synopsis for Shinjuku Incident, starring Jackie Chan. Reading about it, it was clear this was no slap stick kung fu movie. Jackie isn't getting any younger and i guess he thought he should try his hand at some drama. Set in 1990's Japan, Jackie is a mechanic from mainland China who follows his love over to Japan. Both of them are illegal immigrants, and the story is of how they cope. Both in their seperate ways fall in with the Yakuza.

The movie felt a little long, although actually it's only about 2 hours or so. The action in the movie was fairly realistic. Rather than some fancy kung fu moves, adversaries would rather take to each other with bats, guns and knives, much like in real life. the story was ok, but the movie didn't seem very slick somehow.

While i only give this 3/5, i recommend it to anyone who is interested in seeing Jackie Chan do something different. be warned- you will NOT see him do any goofy stunts at all. I saw him stumble in one scene, and i recognised his style, but that was it. And that was what i expected.

Quote
my score for recent movies you may have seen:

5/5 - Michael Clayton, In Bruges, Gran Torino

4.5/5 - Taken, Iron Man, Reign Over Me

4/5 - Traitor, Bedtime Stories, Sunshine, pineapple express

3.5/5 - 300, Max Payne, You dont mess with the Zohan, Yes Man

3/5 - That new Indiana Jones flick, Disturbia, That new TMNT flick,

2.5/5 - The Love Guru. Note: My 2.5 is probably someone elses 1. Just leaving room for worse!

I saw 2 movies last weekend:

007 Quantum of Solace: Sucked, but with a few cool action scenes in the beginning. 2 of 5

Slumdog Millionaire: Pretty darn good movie! Well worth a watch. 4.5 of 5.

Only worthwhile part of the movie imo, was him flipping the dude on the motorcycle, that had me rolling.

For the rest of it, I highly recommend Maddox's review which highlights just about everything thats wrong in a better way than I ever could.

Link is possible nsfw if work reads text.

I thought the QoS thread would've covered it all. I haven't read it of course because I wanted to wait and rent it and be disappointed in person or whatever.

Well, Quantum of Solace hardly covers any new ground for the actors. This is why I thought Shinjuku Incident might be of some interest to a few of you...

And it was horrible.

Want to see a great recent movie, see Let the Right One In.  But try to bit torrent a copy of the DVD screener.  I've heard that they redid the subtitles for the official DVD release and they ruined the movie.

Wonder what they changed? I did see that one on your recommendation, and it was very good.

No no . . . I haven't seen that.  I'm talking echoing the negative Bond reviews.

There's a blog that details all the changes in that movie...

Damn! That's horrible. They must have outsourced it to India.

Man I was going to watch this last night, but found that my downloaded copy had the wrong subs.

Later I noticed its on Netflix streaming (I have an Xbox as well) and verified that the streaming version has both the original audio, and the good subs based on that site you linked.

So if anyone wants to watch this movie, Netflix streaming is a great option, hope to get to watch it soon.
