mame version and games
« on: April 20, 2009, 12:36:06 pm »
new here abviously, what is this that I hear that some newer versions wont play old games and etc...  My cab will be complete next week and I am using Maximus Arcade as my FE.  I would like to hash out all of the bugs before I start downloading and configuring.  Also.  I see a thread on here about high scores and such.  Is that still really easy to do, and do I have to recompile?  Thanx all

some versions of MAME play some games better than others.  It's true.  It will always be a moving target, so you might as well jump in now and if there are games you can't play, then hunt around for specifics.   Most of the issues were the increase in processing power and graphics display power required to meet some of the new audio/video syncing the developers put in to improve the emulation quality.  If your machine is capable of running maximus, then it is absolutely powerful enough to run old games even with the new performance demands.

as for high scores, check the stickied posts in this very forum.  you will have to recompile mame to add supprt for it, but that's easy to do too with the mame compiler.

Great...I havent even dove into a lot of the games yet... But I will keep that in mind...  As for the high scores...  I always wondered why we need to recompile...  Shouldnt the newest version out there have all that built in?

It was removed from MAME because there's really nothing hi-score saving related that is involved with the emulation.  You turned off your galaga machine and those scores were lost.  MAME should act the same way.

The high score saving is kind of an injected feature, and the devs didn't want to be responsible for it because it's not a part of their focus.  Luckily they keep things easy enough for us to put that feature back into the source without much trouble.
