Trying to build n64 arcade system, need help with control pad.

First let me start off by saying i'm new so hi, 2nd I know nothing about wiring or anything of this sort so give me a little break. Now what I'm wanting to do is create an arcade system with a n64 inside. As far as the buttons I wanted to know if I could change the buttons on a joystick I use now for my nintendo. [pics below] I wanted to replace those buttons with different buttons and then take the components out of the controller frame and place the compenents in the arcade system. [same with the joystick]

OP: what you need to do is solder wire to the lead and grounds of all the buttons and directions. most share a common ground but I cant see the PCB to tell you either way. Then run those wires to the buttons. Look up Haruman's 360 hack to get the general idea. If youre afraid or unable, Im sure he can do the N64 controllers for a reasonable price.

I haven't seen that particular pad before, but I probably could.  I hack just about everything.

If I recall the coolest thing about that particular stick is that the center pad was analog!

Hey, I have one of those Madcatz sticks.  I might be interested in having it hacked.  $30 sounds really reasonable.

Also, is it possible to hack the analog stick?  Has anyone tried to do this before?  I don't think I've ever seen a controller hack for any system where the analog stick was replaced with an arcade one.  Is it because the Happ sticks are ridiculously expensive?  Even so, how hard would it be to do?

Yeah, hacking the analog stick is usually not possible.  Some controllers you can (like the official Dreamcast controller), but by hacking the analog stick, it becomes digitital (full on / off).

With that controller, it seems to me you would want to leave the analog as is, and somehow build that into your CP. Ya gotta have analog with the N64...

Since this topic is approaching two years old...I was wondering if any progress has been made on hacking the analog stick?

I am hoping to one day build an N64 arcade cabinet using a hacked N64 controller. Has anyone yet managed to use a happ-style joystick to play N64 games?

The only n64 cab I can imagine would be more kiosk like than an actual cab, with 4 real n64 controllers held in place for players to approach and play.

It is theoretically possible to hack the analog portion of the N64 stick. Unfortunately it isn't easy. Many N64 controllers are dying so someone constructed a pot to encoder adapter. The project, last I read, isn't suitable as a drop in replacement in the controller yet. But it can be adapted in some fashion to a pot based joystick to be used in an arcade setting.

One solution is to use a computer with an N64 emulator and one of these joysticks. Expensive, but it may be worth it to an N64 fan.

that have the adaptiod's and knock's of that setup all over ebay in nice small case's with no tools required.

The OP wanted the controller functions to work using real arcade parts not so much getting a controller to work on the pc there's already plenty of premade/manufactured adapters for a controller to work on the PC.
