RGsB and Monitors
« on: April 17, 2009, 09:13:46 pm »
I need some help here.  I've read that the PlayStation 2 over componant and VGA cables will output RGsB (But not RGBHV) natively just by changing one setting.  However I've been reading that some people only have this work in 480p mode on the PS2 and the ability to be driven by a PS2 in 480i mode is not universal across all monitors that support RGsB.

So I have some questions that hopefully someone can answer:

1) What are the signal details of RGsB 480p?  (H and V frequencies and such)
2) What are the signal details of RGsB 480i?
3) What specifications of a VGA monitor do I need to know to understand if the monitor can work with that signal type and in that range?

Nearly all  PC monitors that support sync on green (RGsB) do not support 480i.

To switch to RGB mode just go into you PS2 bios and change it over from component to RGB.

1.  31khz/60hz

2.  not sure.  Probably 15khz/60hz

3.  If a monitor can do 15khz then you are most likely good to go.

I managed to figure it out and I'll have the same problem as I had read.  The monitor lower limit for horizontal sync is 30kHz so 15kHz 480i isn't possible.  While it could take RGB from the PS2, it would only display when getting a 480p signal, as it's own menus and the majority of games are 480i it would be out of range.

I tested it in practice by telling my graphics card to fire out some 480i even if it was an RGBHV signal, out of range.

So... My idea of Guncons and Time Crisis on super shiny Sony Trinitron's dies.  Oh well. :)

no way man.

Have a look around at VGA boxes for PS2.  All they do is convert Component 480i into VGA 480p.  I am 99% sure this would work with your monitor.

Those cause signal loss.  Any sorta 'deinterlacing' they offer is destructive to the signal.  Also, I'm fairly confident that any light gun sync data would be changed by the box and the guns would be unable to track.
