Using a TV with MSDos
« on: April 09, 2009, 09:25:07 pm »
Greetings,
I was currently using Win98 with a 26" svideo TV.  Worked ok but the kids seem to forget about shutting down the OS before turning the arcade off.
I was thinking of switching to MSdos in win98 and using a frontend etc..
One problem though, When the computer boots up the screen on the TV is static/white noise/garbled until Win98 fully starts.  Then the screen appears correct.

Just wondering if its possible to run MSDos with a TV.  Do I need a special driver for my (older) radeon to run correctly on the TV in MSDos mode?

How old is the PC? I thought even Windows 98 let you specify what to do when the power button was pushed (I could be mistaken, its been a LONG time since I used it). In this case, you want "Shut Down".

Hi TOK,
The PC is a socket 7 /amd athlon 1Ghz mobo with 256Mb ram.
Radeon 7000 video card.
Sound blaster PCI 16
Running win98 se and MAME32 .60

I guess I have a wierd configuration.  I have a 'central' power switch that turns on power to everything along with a momentary pushbutton to turn on the pc.
The thing is the kids forget to either shut down via start/shutdown computer/  OR like you said press the pc power button.
They usually flip the main power switch (which is just a wall type light switch).  This usually results in a hard shut down.
When you power it back on it goes through scandisk.  But now I've had to replace the hard drive (the old one has crashed hard)

I've added a new hard drive but was concidering using MSDos.  The thing is the TV is garbled until it enters Win98 GUI.
If I go into command prompt start up (F8) or while its booting up, the TV is garbled...

Has anyone else gone through this is or is there a work around to allow the radeon 7000 s-video work with the TV during MSDos?

Ok, looking around a bit on the forum, I read I may need some type of VESA driver to run in MSDos?

Anyone know if its possible to run MSDos using a TV (hooked up to a radeon 7000 s-video port), without the TV screen being garbled static?
