Light gun question-- Recoil?
« on: April 07, 2009, 11:08:33 am »
I was wondering if there are any of the really cool light guns that have recoil that are MAME compatible.  I have a couple of Guncon2s, but I think it'd be way cooler to have the heavy duty arcade style ones.

I have not used them personally, but I believe the LCD Topgun 2 guns, have recoil and are compatible with mame.

After looking for a few hours. (  :( ) it seems the topguns are hit or miss.

I also can't figure out how the guncons are supposed to be hooked up to an arcade monitor.  I found a circuit here http://xoomer.virgilio.it/guncon2/VideoCon1.htm but there's a broken image and it seems kinda vague.

I think that circut is for taking an RGBHV where the Horizontal and Vertical sync signals are seperate, and merging them to create a signal that the Guncon can understand to get the sync data for it's timing purposes.

I think however that this is only necessary for RGBHV output, I know the Guncon2 works with composite and YPbPr component video, where it gets it's sync data from the green luma line.

I've been meaning to test that Guncon's support of RGsB (RGB, Sync On Green).  I know that the PS2 can natively output RGsB over it's component cables and sinc both H and V sync information are going down the green line.   I have a pair of Dell Trinitron P1110 monitors that support RGsB so I could test it out if I get a component RCA/phono to D-sub 15 cable to connect it.  No signal conversoin necessary.  I just havn't been in a hurry to buy a $30 cable so I can play 480i interlaced Time Crisis 3 on a 21" CRT computer monitor.

Then that circuit is exactly what I need?  I have an arcade monitor with separate H & V syncs.

If you have H and V seperate, I think that circut is necessary,  The guncon only has one input for video sync data, a composite video jack, so it expects H and V to be on the same line.

However it wouldn't be necessary if you're using a third party Guncon that uses LED markers instead of cathode ray timing

True, but I already have two Guncon2s on hand...  I'd rather spend <$20 to get them working than to go out and pay 50+ to get one IR gun... although it seems like I may have to.  Kinda wish I kept Time Crisis 4.

Speaking of IR... what about Wiimotes?  O.O

I know there are BlueTooth drivers to use the wiimotes as pointers or controllers and other stuff.  I'm pretty sure you can get the Wiimote to work as a 'mouse' in a PC without any insane difficulty, though you'd need a blue tooth adaptor on the PC.

However the Wiimote itself isn't very good as a 'gun' I think.  If you have the Guncon 2 NPC-106 from Namco I say stick with it.  It's decenty well constructed for a non-arcade piece of hardware, I have three I use on PS2 games at events and they seem to survive heavy usage without any triggers failing.  Plus it has 5 buttons plus a D pad which could be handy for controlling the emulator as desired.  It wouldn't be TOO hard to find someone who could build that circut for you if you can't do it yourself.

How dare you question my abilities!

 :P

I just don't want to make it and then find out it doesn't work because X or find out I can't use two guns.  That page offers no information.

The only hard part about actually making it would be finding the parts.  All I have near me is a radioshack that tends to have anything but what I need.
