Arrgghh, My Xbox got an E74 Error
« on: April 06, 2009, 11:14:53 am »
Well Ive tried all the fixes and took it into a local repair shop called Tek Republic. They fixed the problem once and I bought a 90day warranty just in case. Sure enough last night I got a E74 error again and they say its unrepairable at this point. Since I modded the case, Microsoft would never take it back in the condition its in. Tek Republic says they can retrofit it, if I can get another OEM original white shell casing for the X360. However I have to get a shell casing that I either know the registered information if it has been registered. Otherwise they will not accept it? Is this true? Does the X360 repair policy require a clear serial number?

BTW only reason I ask this is because I bought my X360 used with the cosole only and do not know the past history on it. I have seen several shells that could work on ebay but I am kind of scared of buying a shell that I cannot use. Any help or information would be appreciated.

Yep, they actually did a full fix on it including replacing the X-clamps and using some thermal compound. It worked for like a month after the tech shops initial fix so when this happened I thought they would be able to fix it again no problem. Unfortunatley didnt turn out that way, they said they tried 3 times to fix it and now its giving the RROD.

As far as I know (somebody can correct me if Im wrong), once the tamper sticker (silver sticker, under faceplate) is removed, MS fixes it for a flat fee ($150 i thought).  I have fixed several I bought off E-bay, and I'm guessing yours is done from what you are mentioning. I know I sent a couple i got of E-bay in (a year ago or more) without doing anything (regestering or anything, just called MS) and got warrenty so I dont think you have to have regestered it with MS. But if its been opened at all and MS knows, you are screwed.

My advice, sell it on E-Bay, keep your HD (if you have one) and pick up the new arcade pack. You should be out maybe $50-100 max when all is said and done.

The E74 error is a pain in the ass...  This error seems to have really started after, and possibly caused by, the NXE update.  My 360 was working perfectly fine, but then I updated it to NXE and 2 days later I got the E74 error.  I did an X-Clamp fix and also tried a couple other fixes.  Nothing fixed it...  As far as I know, there is no DIY fix for this E74 error.

I ended up removing the X-Clamp fix and restored everything back to stock.  Called MS and they want $120 to fix it.

Well just as an update I got a new oem white case from the tech shop I went to and luckily it was not registered so I had them retrofit the pos 360 I had. I entered its serial through the Microsoft website and had the shipping label printed and sent by Tues. of last week. They have already received it and it says it currently in repair. Im hoping itll be sent back soon but the warranty date has expired im afraid. However since their new extended warranty mine may be ok. The guy at the tech shop tested the system for me just to show me what it was doing before we sent it in and sure enought the E74 error somehow caused now a 3 RROD error so I am hoping since the console i registered has a manf. date of 08- 2007 it should be covered with that extended 3 year warranty. If not I will have quite a bit of accessories and games to sell for the 360 and Ill call it quits with the X360 for good. Glad I got my PS3 to keep me company!!

 :laugh2:
Hell Yea!

When I called them, I chewed their supervisor a new ---uvula--- about the E74.  I stated that this error should be added to the RRoD warranty.  I put in a formal complaint through that supervisor and also on their website.  I'm really glad to see this.... Thank you very much for bringing it to our attention!

Just got my X360 back today and it looks to be brand new. The manufacturer date says 4-14-2009 tested it today and works good. Now for how long we shall find out...Still comes with the free month of LIVE, total time it took from delivery to recieiving back was about 9 days. Not bad I expected it to be longer.

My Elite has the E74 error, but since I bought it used and the sn is already registered, I can't get warranty service. I am going to have to tear into it when school lets out. I did a little bit of searching and found a lot of conflicting information. Do some of you experienced guys have any tips? If I can't get it working, I may replace it with a PS3. I don't think I want to keep buying such a poorly designed product. It is a shame too, because I really liked it when it was working.

Thanks Bob,
Since it is used, I had to call in and get it approved, but they are going to fix it for free.  :applaud:

Paul

I almost took it apart last weekend to try to fix it. I knew procrastination would pay off someday if I waited long enough.  ;D

I simply LOVE the fanboy-ism in the comments.
Its great having all 3 systems and being called a fanboy because I like my 360 the best. It has the most games I want to play on it. The Wii is gimmick driven, but the lightgun games are great (HOTD 2&3), the PS3 is the most expensive paperweight Ive ever bought.

If my 360 red rings, then I'll start to play it as much as Ive played my PS3
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Well, I got my X360 back, the guy at the tech shop verified the serial number on the board was just manufactured therefore I got a new X360 Pro for $100. Nice  :) So I had them put my custom case back on and I went ahead and purchased the OEM case Microsoft sent back with the replacement console. Just in case I have to return it again for repair I wont be as desperate in finding an unregistered case.

With my OEM case the console would run at about 96 degrees idle. With my custom case it reduces it to 86 degrees idle without a game loading. So now I am back on X360!! Heres a pic after having it run idle for about 5 hours while syncing with my computer as a media extender.

I just got note that my 360 has been shipped back to me today...  Very quick turnaround.

I requested the box on Wednesday of last week, got the box on Friday, shipped it out on Friday.  They received it on Monday, and today I get an email stating that it has been repaired and shipped out.  Should be here on Thursday.  Either it is a really quick fix or they are just shipping back new units...

So, less than a week...  BUT I guess living about 20 miles from the repair outlet they had me ship it to probably helps a little.
