Sharp Image Image Distortion ( Pictures Included)
« on: April 03, 2009, 11:47:53 am »
I don't know what model this Sharp Image is so I have attached Images of the chassis as well as the problem I am having. The initial problem was the image was completely distorted. I notice one swollen cap on the board. After a few hrs of it on the monitor went black and started making a high pitch noise. Since I was busy with another game at the moment I turned it off and took it off to do a cap kit.  I replaced all the caps. After the cap kit I installed it back in the cabinet and it turned on with no problem. The top part of the image looks beautiful but the bottom part still looks distorted. If you need any more information let me know. I have tried adjusting all the pots but nothing. Any help is apreciate it. thanks

 familiar tv failure !

so, a couple of possibilities :

the vert output is in the process of failing.
there is also a resistor/capacitor (rc)  in series to ground from the drive output on the vert out.
the resistor ( 2.2 ohms - typ) will open allowing the horiz component to be output.
 cap is"usually" ok
this condition also stresses the vert output ic causing it to run hot /fail.

Thank you for the tip but no luck. I replaced the TDA and still no luck. Also checked all the resistors in the area nothing open. :banghead:

which TDA is it ?
and be aware that counterfeit parts are out there -  know your source !!

the rc combo to which i attempted to describe, filters the output of the vert ic to ground .
the values are such that any horizontal "noise" will be removed from the yoke drive.
since most ic vertical stages are looped, any distortion will feedback through the circuit.

this symptom is common on many models of tvs of various mfgrs.  look just like ur pic !!

also check the "pump up/boost" diode feeding that ic

The TDA Used was a TDA1675A (IC901), according to the pdf of the chip,  the RC combo you describes is as follows (R226) it’s a 1k ohm resistor followed by (C907) 1000uf 16v capacitor.  The capacitor then runs to ground which is what I think the series you refer to as your combo.  Sorry I have no schematics so im tracing along.  Now I know pin 1 is my amplifier output on the chip thanks to the pdf  I have.  The cap is new due to a cap kit and the resistor although is a 1k ohms resistor, it reads good.  They do go through my yoke hookup.  Now the “pump up/boost” Diode you refer to, I’m assuming is off Pin 2 which is my Amplifier supply, the diode is (D902) 1n4002, which also reads good. Please correct me If I’m going in the wrong direction. Is a bit tricky without a schematic.  Also you think I can use a Sharp KTMF chassis with this yoke. I need to fix this game asap for a location.

the rc filter to which i was referring should be from pin 1 to ground .
open 2.2ohm res is common

see 11 page spec sheet :

"test" schematic should be fairly close to what u actually have  ;D

Let me start by saying thank you for all the help. I finally found the resistor (2.2 ohms), there's actually 2 of them running from pin 1.  I tested the resistor and it measured good. I still went ahead and replaced it and replaced the (chicklet) capacitor as well. I still had the same problem.  :( Anything else comes to mind?

ok, check the dc voltage on pins 2,14.

pin 2 should read higher than pin 14. if not the diode may be at fault.
note : it can "test" good,  but malfuntion in an active circuit ...
a 200piv/1a gen purpose rect diode will work fine here.

the cap across pins 2, 15 can cause problems,  as can the vert yoke return cap - and any other 'lytic on pin 12
