right kinst is like that and works

however trying to play area51/mx with all software needed and right results brings up an error about not having chd for area51

You did put the 'area51mx.chd' file into a directory named 'area51mx', correct?  Just off your ROMS directory?

That's correct on my end.

So...what you're saying is your structure looks like this:

C:\MAME
C:\MAME\ROMS
C:\MAME\ROMS\area51mx.zip
C:\MAME\ROMS\AREA51MX\area51mx.chd

Is that correct?  And you're still having problems?

What is the exact error you're getting?

Wait...you had the CHD file zipped?  That's why it wouldn't work.

the chd file must be the original name as it was when you downloaded it
in a folder of the same name or loose in your mame directory one of those 2 i forget which
then you must have the roms to go with it in a proper folder

I guess I still don't get it.  I'm not sure where you got your CHD from, but the burners span them into either RARs or spannign ZIPs.  They need to be uncompressed/unspanned to work.  Although they WILL work if placed in the same ZIP as the ROMs, it's not recommended.

Is that what you did?  Placed the .chd file with the ROMs?
