Capcom games running with black bar down left side - please help!

I've been reading around and also tried MAME Resolution Tool but I still can't solve this...

Whenever I run Capcom games (although there may be others as well!), I get a black bar down the left side of my screen...(I'm using a CRT PC Monitor by the way)... MAME Resolution Tool solved it on the test run but when I generate the INIs and run the game through Mala I still get the black bar everytime (perhaps I'm doing something wrong in MAME Resolution Tool!? ). It's driving me nuts!! I solved some of my computer's resolution problems this evening but don't know how to solve this one... pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease, someone help! I want all my games to gloriously fill my cabinet's screen...
