My favorite controller is getting worn out and I'm not sure how specific I need to be. Do I need to rule out picking up a PS2 gamepad and look for a PS1 specific pad?

Yes, you can use a PS2 controller on the PSX.

Just wanted to chime in on one note.
there not the same.
I have had no problems on a PS2 game pad on PS1
but have had a few problems on a few games on a PS1 game pad on a PS2

It's been yonkers, but doesn't the PS2 instruction manual specifically state that using a PS1 pad on a PS2 game might cause problems and to make every effort to use the appropriate pad for the appropiate game?

yh it works... but it occasionally does odd things so probably not recommended as a perminant thing
