Looking at options for monitor for MAME cab.
« on: March 10, 2009, 02:51:05 am »
I've been getting things together to build a MAME cab for a while, and just recently ran across an old cabinet that was given to me.  I figure I'll use it instead of trying to build the whole thing from scratch.  I've looked at options for what to do with the monitor.  The monitor has some burn-in from the game it previously ran so I'm not sure if it would be worth fixing (when you turn the cab on, it displays nothing but a vertical line, kinda like the whole image is squished into it, model is a Sampo KGR-1901H).  I was also looking at a new monitor, but since this would be a MAME  cab, I'd like to have a multisync model if possible, but I'm not sure they're made in 19" varieties.   I've found what looks to be a deal on a standard 19" monitor, but don't know about it's quality:

Also, here's a pic of the cab in question:

Like I said, I'd like multisync (preferably with VGA) if possible, but it looks like 19" is the limit as far as monitor size goes, which appears to not have much to offer in this regard.  I did find a Vision Pro 19" with VGA, but it doesn't appear to support 15KHz.

Other obvious options are either TV tube or standard PC monitor, of course.

I found a monitor from Wells-Gardner that looks to be exactly what I'd like (19" Multisync):

I'm aware of the topic discussing WG monitors above, but has anyone had experience with this?  I've heard positive things searching for this monitor online.

That looks a lot like a defender cab.  Pretty sweet for free.  From the little bit I have learned about monitors that is called a vertical collapse.  Most likely the vertical ic is shot so you'll need to get the chassis repaired.  I would certainly wait for someone more knowledgeable to come along and verify though.  If the monitor isn't too badly burnt it's probably worth repairing.  Peale recommended an online place to me arcadecup.com that will repair the chassis for a flat fee.  Problem is you have to discharge the tube to disconnect the chassis.  I read a lot about discharging and was still a little gun shy so I found a local guy through craigslist.  If you are tight on cash you could use a 21" computer monitor until you settle on getting this one repaired or replacing it with a new one.  Good luck on your build this has been one of my most satisfying hobbies so far just because it involves so many things I like to do, gaming, computers, electronics, woodworking.  Sorry I'm rambling.
