Watchmen
« on: March 05, 2009, 05:43:53 am »
Just saw this with a friend at the cinema. I dont know what to say except that it was awesome! i havent read the graphic novel so i cant compare or be disappointed. The style was very 'graphic novel', i think it was translated well in that sense. Some scary moments for my female friend to hold me tight (note to self: take her to some thrillers).

The violence was very graphic for this movie genre, and there is even full frontal male nudity. Granted, it was Dr Manhatten. But still...

I'm not really familiar with any of the actors that starred, but they all did well. But especially the guy who played Rorshak. Incidentally, i just ordered a book called 'Hey, it's that guy!', which is a reference guide to all those character actors you see but can never remember the name of...

Maybe 2/3 to 3/4 it dragged a little which chops the top off a perfect score from me. My friend didn't like the ending, but i did. So that could be a contentious issue for some.

4.5/5

Quote
my score for recent movies you may have seen:

5/5 - Michael Clayton, In Bruges, Gran Torino

4.5/5 - Taken, Iron Man, Reign Over Me

4/5 - Traitor, Bedtime Stories, Sunshine, pineapple express

3.5/5 - 300, Max Payne, You dont mess with the Zohan, Yes Man

3/5 - That new Indiana Jones flick, Disturbia, That new TMNT flick,

2.5/5 - The Love Guru. Note: My 2.5 is probably someone elses 1. Just leaving room for worse!

This is a must-see, I've been looking forward to it for months. I read the comic books when they came out back when I was in college.

Of course, there have been other movies based on works of fiction I loved, such as The Dogs of War and Battlefield Earth, that have disappointed.

I have to say from the previews that this movie has visual cinematography quality off the charts. I would be curious to see how good the story is though. It is supposed to be faithful to the book, but with a different ending. I never read the book, or even heard of it until the movie started getting buzz a few years back.

Excellent!!!

It looks like a good movie, but the reviews I've read said if you didn't read the comix you'll be frustrated with the movie, so I lost interest in seeing it.

I'm looking forward to going. It's long, and 300-esque, so that might be lost on some people. But, that translates beautifully to this type of comic. I'll probably see it on imax to so that should be fun.

...I surely hope that was tongue in cheek, because that is HILARIOUS! Heroes is a poor rip-off of Rising Stars. Rising Stars is kind of a rip-off of Watchmen.

Seriously, Heroes is the WORST show on Television. I think I would rather watch Knight Rider.

So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

Saw it today. Have to say, it's pretty dang good. Definitely not your average super hero movie (or story for that matter).

What was really scary, though was coming out of the theater and seeing a LONGGGG line of people with what had to be 4-6 year olds in tow.

This is +most+ definitely NOT a kid movie.  :soapbox:

DC has instead used the trademark Shazam! as the title of their comic books and thus the name under which they market and promote the character. Consequently, Captain Marvel himself is sometimes erroneously referred to as Shazam.

No wonder I wait for everything to go to the $1.50 theater.

Hmm, everyone I've talked to lately has agreed with me that the current crop of Heroes episodes have been great. The season had a big lull just after it started, but the fugitives storyline has been pretty good.

Back on topic, we went Saturday night to see Watchmen and we loved it. I was shocked to see it condensed down in a way I could be happy with. Jackie Earle Haley was the perfect Rorschach.

I saw it over the weekend and thought it was excellent. I almost want to go around punching the fanboy nerds in the mouth for criticizing some of the most minute details, because they're missing the point. These guys did an EXCELLENT job brining the comic to life, and they were extremely faithful to the characters in the process. Many lines they left untouched (thank goodness), and they did a killer job with wardrobe and special effects.

Obviously some concessions had to be made for time restraints, but I bet a director's cut video release will help to put in some of the smaller scenes that had to be left out. I hope some of the newsstand conversations get put back in.

And Frizz, you're downright insane if you claim that Heroes is even half as good as Lost. INSANE!!!

The sex scene might make you uncomfortable in that company, but there's nothing more than T and A shown. The scene is very out of place in the movie. It was only hinted at in the book, but they linger on it for a bit too long here.

The sex scene is way overdone. It felt kinda pornographic to me as it shows them switching up positions and really getting raw with it. I didn't care for the scene, now matter how blasted hot Malin Ackerman might be.

The violence is pretty rough, but I would wager that most 16 year olds could handle it just fine.

BORING? random clowns cant be serious. yes its a long movie but to be perfectly honest it felt more like a 1.5 hour movie. I was never bored at all. these no name actors played their part very well. especially Rorschach. that dude has potential.

And Frizz, you're downright insane if you claim that Heroes is even half as good as Lost. INSANE!!!

I guess I am insane.  Lost...well...lost me about  2 years ago.  I stopped watching because of the absurdity of the story line.  It was getting really... really... really... REALLY stupid..

Boo... Heroes is a decent show... LOST... now that is one massive floating turd.

I have to assume that you don't watch Heroes anymore. Even my wife thinks the show sucks now - and that is saying something!

Every week... surely not as good as the 1st season but much better than the shortened 2nd.

You quit watching just as it started to get good! Last season was excellent, and this season is excellent too. Answers are abound every week.

P.S., we got to see the 4 toed statue in its original form last week.  ;D

The 1st 2-3 episodes were good at the start of season 3, but holy crap the show went off the tracks in a big way! The whole Arthur Petrelli story...awful on an Epic scale. The show contradicts itself HORRIBLY in every episode. Either the writers are that bad, or they just assume their fans are mindless zombies. Apparently the former is true, since the fans have been abandoning ship by the millions.

To those who have seen it:
Other than a blue shlong, is there anything else *really* objectionable, you wouldn't bring a 16 year old to see?

the 19 year old son of a workmate saw watchmen and didnt like it. so maybe the only 'danger' is that your kid just wont get it  :dunno

girl i was with is 28 and she loved it. but thought i was uber nerd for recognising henry kissinger and lee iaccocca. shes never heard of them...

Haven't seen this yet, but really at 16, the content limits should be off.  That kid has seen more schlongs in the last month than all of us combined.
She better not have.
