Should I use a noise filter?
« on: March 04, 2009, 01:49:45 pm »
Today I will be hooking up a computer to an arcade monitor. This is my first time taking on a project like this. I have no experience with the inner workings of a real arcade game except for 2 that I have stripped for parts. An Arch Rival cabinet I took apart had a noise filter that went in between the isolation transformer and the monitor's power input.

Is this filter needed (or recommended) for all arcade monitors? I still have the one from arch Rivals, should I go ahead and use it?

you need to check what monitor you are using first as some require an isolation transformer rather than are run direct from mains input
all cabs i have ever built have had a mains filter on the input btw

Yes, I do need an isolation transformer. I'm waiting for the UPS truck to drop it off today. Do all iso transformers need noise filters?

its not a case of the iso needing the filter but the actual cab,it will help to suppress any noise in the mains which could be picked up via the monitor
for the price and time of fitting one i would strongly suggest it

Thanks! I'll go ahead and re-use the one from my Arch Rivals cab. I hope I can follow the hacked-up wiring job. Is there an online wiring map on how it should be done?

...I think I have it figured out...
