Is Atari's Off the Wall really a 3-player game?
« on: February 26, 2009, 10:21:08 pm »
I changed the service settings in the game (running on MAME 115u2) from 2-player to 3-player but can't seem to start a 3-player game.

Oddly, player 3 button 1 seems to be player 2's button 1.  That took a little figuring & remapping to conclude.  However, I can't find out how to start a 3-player game--none of the buttons seems to be that elusive P3 start.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Jason

KLOV shows it as a 2 player game.

KLOV shows it as a 2 player game.

Yeah, but klov also says you can play 3 player, and choose between joystick & "rotary control" (aka "Whirly-gig" to Atari Games, aka pot based paddle, but emulated in mame as a dial, aka spinner).  Not that klov is always right, but the game's O&M kit manual also says the same, and you can play 3 player in mame.

OP, not sure about your version, but with 0.129 the game's "start" buttons are mame's player button 1s.  From what you say, and what the manual seems to say, in 3 player mode, the third player is the middle player, and player 1 is still the left player, and player 2 is still the right player.  (Hmm, not when I played though: right player was p3, and I didn't have to switch P2 & P3 buttons.)  Alway, see what buttons you have mapped to each player's button 1, and use those.  Or remap the game's said buttons to be your CP's "p#b1 or start #".

Thanks for the nth time, Rebel!

That sure confused me, for some reason.  I think it's the fact that, as you say, player 2 is on the right & player 3 is in between players 1 & 2...

I still maintain that the buttons (or dials) for players 2 & 3 are swapped.

I have dial 2 analog set to Mouse 5 X (my right spinner), but P2 button 1 is set to Mouse 4 button 2 (on my portable X-Arcade trackball).

But!  I have dial v 3 analog set to mouse 4x (my portable trackball) & P3 button 1 set to "N", which is next to player 2.

I think I'm not crazy & I've got that straight... :]

In any case, I've got the buttons mapped correctly, which is all that matters (for me), but others ought watch out--this game's setup is wacky.

Thanks,
-Jason
