ARCADE CABIENT TO ROM
« on: February 17, 2009, 09:56:30 am »
Hi,

I have a arcade cabient and I want to pull the game onto my PC. Is there anyway to do this?

It is a rare game so I can't just download it.

in otherwords....

How do I dump from the arcade games original circuit-board ROM Chip to create a ROM image that will work with MAME?

you will need an eeprom reader/burner to do the job.
Or you can pull the mainboard out and send it to one of the MAME developers.

If MAME doesn't already have support for the game, just dumping the ROM won't let you play it-someone still would have to write the actual emulator for it.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Just curious , what is the name of the game?

Often games share same hardware, so if a game that uses a similar hardware is already emulated, it it could be relatvly simple to be able to play  your game. (thus you will have to modify  a version of mame).

It is The Grid by Midway 2001 version

I have the arcade cabients.

It is in the MAME directory but there is no working ROM for it. The ones that are out there I never got to work.

How expensive is a eeprom reader/burner ?

Chances are that there is no working rom for it because the encryption hasn't been broken yet. Check the mamedevs site to see what the status is on the emulation of this, perhaps they need something on your board you can contribute to help them make it functional...far cheaper than a reader imho.

I would venture to guess, since I have played this game, that even if they do emulate it...it will take skylab type computers to run it, due to it being basically a 3d shooter.

this is what it says on the mamedev site...

Mortal Kombat 4, Cruis'n Exotica, The Grid, Invasion - These Zeus and Zeus II-based games all use a proprietary 3D graphics chip that has no available documentation. As of MAME 0.121u4, Mortal Kombat 4 is classed as working.

I sent them a email last week but still have not heard anything.
