Would this pc work just as a mame comp?
« on: February 14, 2009, 08:49:51 pm »
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856107034 heres the link seems small enough but not sure of the graphics. My rig here runs a 9800 gt so it perfectly smooth just wondering whats the lowest I can go. Otherwise Im just going to donate this computer into my mame cab but it seems like over kill.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

You would just need to use an older version of MAME. Something in the .90s.

The videocard does close to nothing for mame, so whether you have a GMA950 or a 9800GT is does not really matter. If you think about this, consider an Asus EEE box. It has RAM and HD included, Wifi, Gigabit, DVI and an XP licence. And the EEE is really wonderful made. A much better deal IMO.

FTFY. ;)  Video matters more than it used to (and for a couple years now).  Still CPU matters a lot more than video card.

Speaking of which, an Atom CPU @ 1.66 Ghz?  I haven't seen mame benchmarks with it, but the CPU is more designed toward lower power use than high end emulation speed.  I'd guess it's about the same as a PIII @ 1.0-1.5 (or P4 @ 1.66, or athlon @ 1.0-1.5, or PenM @ ~0.75-1.25) at very rough estimates.  Workable for some low end games, but not the top end with current mame.
