Doing the arcade machine with 5/8 instead of 3/4?
« on: February 07, 2009, 12:40:15 pm »
I am thinking of doing the whole machine with 5/8 MDF instead of 3/4 (I have see a lot of project with 3/4). The reason is the weight of the machine... I try to cut down the weight.

Do you see any problem using 5/8 MDF to build the entire machine?

I used 5/8" for the same reason and it worked just fine.  Though it was a little harder to find.

... Why is it that you always find it in the last place that you look? ...

I used 3/4" for the sides and then 5/8" for everything else to partially keep the weight down but still have the look of 3/4" t-moulding.

For the Molding, I see on the website that I can get 5/8 so it doesnt look to be a problem.

Thank for your feedback :)

My cabinet at home uses 5/8" instead of 3/4. It definitely cut down the weight, but the downside is that a lot of t-molding suppliers have limited colours in stock in the 5/8 category. But you don't necessarily need to get 5/8" molding for your cab, you can get 3/4" then trim it down for your needs, see here:

Interesting, I am still not very sure of how to do it with the chisel, doesn't seem to be that much easy and the more dangerous part will be around the plexiglass... humm :dizzy:
