Assistance with a Nanao MS8-26SU
« on: February 07, 2009, 02:03:11 pm »
Good day folks... long time listener, first time caller. ;-)

I have a Nanao MS8-26SU from a Virtua Fighter cabinet, which I acquired "as-is".  The game itself powers up, makes noise and seems to be groovy, but the screen is unhappy.

While I could hear the tube charge, there was no picture and it was making the "Bad Electronics"(tm) smell.  Closer inspection showed that R432 and R445 were blackened and smoking.  R433 is also showing blackening.

Closer inspection of the track-side indicates that someone has worked in this unit before... using heavy grade flux-cored solder; which has caked around the joints and over some tracks.  Based on this, it looks like they've replaced Q401 and Q402, but that's about it.  All of the caps look to be in good shape, with no leakage or swelling.  (Including the one on the neck board.)

In my enthusiasm, I did order a "Repair kit" for this from ebay... (I know, I know) which includes C341, C513, C906, C909, C910, C912, C953, Q503 and Q901.  None of which I've seen referenced in postings discussing this unit.

So my questions are:
 - What would the likely cause the overheating / shorting of R432, R445 and R433?
 - Any idea what someone was trying to achieve replacing Q401 and Q402?
 - Does anyone have a readable schematic for this unit?  (I have a JPEG of one, but can't make out the components from it)
 - What should I be replacing R432, R445 and R433 with?
 - Besides the parts listed above, is there anything else I should be looking to replace in overhauling this board?
 - On the off chance that the previous repairer was an arse, what should Q401 and Q402 be?

Suggestions or retorts on any of these points would be sincerely appreciated... the board is currently off the chassis and has the three burnt resistors removed... so I can't do much in terms of testing until I replace those.  (At least.)

Sincerest thanks in advance,

Jo-jo.

I have the same monitor and also looked at that same kit on ebay I believe and it only comes with about a 1/4 if that of what an actual complete capkit comes with.

I think I got my kit from joemac and it was alot cheaper then the tiny ebay kits also.

my capkit came with 30 piece's how many did yours come with?

I also have schematics in a larger J-peg fromat for most nanao chassis.

Hey there, thanks for the reply.

The kit I purchased wasn't actually sold as a "cap kit", but as a "repair kit", presumably by someone familiar with the product and the components while most commonly present issues... of course this makes a good volume of assumptions including (a) the reliability of vendor and (b) the validity of their experience; however in my enthusiasm, it sounded like a good cure-all. ;-)

The kit includes seven caps and two transistors... the PCB ref #'s of which are in the initial post.

I'd certainly appreciate a readable copy of the schematic if you're willing.

Thanks again,

Jo-jo.

I see I thought you were after a full capkit

I wanted a full one and only found some guys on ebay that were selling full kits but they were not even close to a full kit.

Sorry for the delay in replying... too much going on!

Thanks for that, it is in fact the same one I have... which I've had a hard time reading.  I'll keep peering at it, perhaps my wife can make out the things I can't. ;-)

Cheers,

Jo-jo.
