Frontend with PC Game support?
« on: January 21, 2009, 02:05:54 pm »
Hey everyone, just started getting into the whole MAME/arcade cabinet hobby not too long ago.  I've recently finished a portable 2-player arcade controller setup that hooks into a laptop and plugs into a TV.  Trying to get the software half of the equation working properly before I take the next steps.

Anyways, in addition to MAME and my console emus, I would like to be able to launch PC games from it too.  Nothing spectacular, games like Mugen, Super Mario War, and maybe some of the more classic PC games (You Don't Know Jack,

I'm using Maximus Arcade right now, and it works great, but I can't get it to run PC games.  I know you have to use batch files to get it to work, which I tried.  The batch files work just fine if I double click on them, the game opens right up.  But for some reason within Maximus Arcade I get a never ending black loading screen.  I tried using a couple different versions of the bat, changing the syntax a little, and still nothing.

I played around with MaLa a little bit, and still no joy with bat files or windows shortcuts.  This one seemed a little harder to configure, but I think I had it right.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good FE to use?  I don't need much in the way of features other than it being (somewhat) straightforward to setup, support multiple emus, and be able to play nice with PC games.

Thanks in advance!

You might want to check out HyperSpin if your computer can handle it...   While PC Gaming isn't added into a default install we can show you how to setup a PC Gaming menu entry and lists.  Just come join the forums and ask there and we'll get ya running.

You can try also AtomicFE , it runs PC games .

And have a look also to the ultimate Distribution that contain 115 preconfigured emulators , including screen to run PC games.

But i'm sure Maximus and Mala can run PC game too.

all major frontends can run PC games as well, as long they can run bat or shortcut files.

Mamewah did not have any problems with it, and hope my own MultiFE does not have that problem too.

in the bat files you might require to setup the path too, before launching the game, otherwise some games might not run correctly, somewhere this (from my mind, not tested):

Code: [Select]
c:
cd c:\to\your\game
startgame.exe

This is due some frontends might not send the path correctly and you need do that your self.
Decade Old Work: MultiFE, ArcadeMusicBox
Today Works: Various Spectrum Next games from Rusty Pixels and html5 games.

I know that MA and MaLa can, I just can't get them to work for some reason.  I'll see if AtomicFE is any different.  Thanks

As an update, I got the new beta of Maximus Arcade to work, without even doing anything differently.  I dunno what the difference is in the software and why that works but the previous release doesn't

I saw you post on the HS forums...  I posted what you need to get PC Games setup in HyperSpin.  Unfortunately it appears that our site is down right now though. :(
