Sidewinder X6 Keyboard
« on: January 20, 2009, 03:23:23 pm »
Dropped by the local Frys and drooled over the latest offering from Microsoft (Looks a lot like my beloved Logitech NewTouch) when I spotted another Microsoft keyboard. The Sidewinder X6. Now, the keyboard itself looks like crap. Not my style. But then I noticed the NumPad was a seperate component that could be attached on either side of the keyboard. Whoopdeedoo.  :-\

What grabbed my eye though was just how MS designed this keyboard. Both the keyboard and NumPad have mating connectors on both sides with magnets. Bring either close together and vooop they stick together and the connectors seat just right.

I played with this some more and realized there was practically no noticeable insertion force whatsoever on the connectors. The magnet did all of the work. It was a lot like a ZIF but without the silly bar.

Anyone know what kind of connectors this keyboard is using? Anybody have a guess? At all?

One of the reviews I've read on it lists it only as proprietary. Haven't seen one up close to venture a guess if it is based on any particular standard or not. It's a great Idea, but I don't care for the integrated wrist rest - won'y fit in the keyboard tray I use on my desk.
