Donkey Kong coin door compatibility???
« on: January 16, 2009, 12:37:07 am »
I'm restoring an original Donkey Kong right now and the coin door is pretty bad.  I've tried looking and calling around but haven't been able to find a suitable replacement (or any for that matter).

My question is, has anyone tried cutting out the coin door opening in the cabinet to fit a more commonly available coin door and if so which one can I use?

Thanks.

I may have an extra left over from my restoration. I will check tomorrow.

Whatever you do, DON'T do that. You hurt the cab by doing it and it won't be/look original anymore. The idea of restoring is bringing it back to it's original state (as much as possible). Those coindoors are pretty specific for Nintendo and pretty much stopped to exist when they got out of the arcade business.

However, I'm sure there are people (check out e-bay and the KLOV forum) who have one of these for sale.  Hope pcates has one for you.

Is there any reason why no one makes a replacement door?

Also, why can't I find the monitor glass/bezel art anywhere either?  Everyone carries DK Jr. but no DK???

Level42, I have been trying to keep this as original as possible.  The guy I got it from bought it in 1985 and it spent most of its life in storage, but for some reason, people felt obligated to leave cigarettes on the CP and kick in the coin door???

pcates, please let me know if you find that extra coin door.  As long as it's straight, I can paint it if necessary.  Thanks!

javeryh, I think arcadeshop has the DK art bezels for $45.

Wow, not sure how I missed that!  Thanks for the head's up.  I'm so tempted to place an order now even though I can't begin work until the weather gets warm enough to paint outside!

No luck yet.  Still looking for a decent coin door for my DK restoration.

The Nintendo coin door is an odd size. It's bigger than most others. Personally, I think it's a horrible design.

I agree, one of the weakest coin doors I've ever seen too, but that's probably because crime rates are a lot lower in Japan ?
Still, keep it original if possible.

You have much more chance to find one on the KLOV forum.
