Front Ends?
« on: June 22, 2003, 04:30:47 pm »
First of all, I'm not sure whether this should be in the main forum or software, so please move it where you see fit :)

As some of you know, I'm going to be starting my first cab project soon, and have been playing some games to... uh.... make sure they work correctly. Yeah.. that's it  ;D

Anyway, I dont want to run command line in my cab to run games, so I need to know what some good frontends are? I have seen some pages with a TONNNN of choices, but I have no clue where to start. I don't exactly want to install/uninstall 328 frontends or something like that.

So... what would you guys recommend for an easy to install/implement front end for windows. I'd like it to show a screenshot or flyer or something, which most seem to do. Please just point me in the right direction with a few good choices. Being able to handle multiple emulators instead of just MAME is a major plus.

I've tried ArcadeFX which was ok, but it seems to drag a bit for my liking, and this was on a pretty beefy system.

try arcadeos it's easy to set up, and workds great!

arcadefx would be nice if it had the bugs and slowness worked out...
but it's not updated anymore so it's dead...

The easiest front end I ever set up was Game Launcher. It was good and could use multiple emulators. I'm not quite sure why I switched.

Now I use Mamaewah and I like it. Mamewah has sort of an ArcadeOS feel to it, but I feel like it's cleaner. Documentation is so/so, but it's dependable.

I recently switched to MAMEWAH and liked it so much I am now going to stick with it. It's especially good for cabinets without a keyboard.  Neat features include:
Quick navigation through the game list including jump up/down (left right on stick)
Can run at 640 X 288 resolution which is the highest an arcade monitor can display non-interlaced
Everything controlled through the buttons (similar to ArcadeOS)
Can shut down Windows via the menu.
Plus all the other features you find in a good front end.

MAMEWAH is my fav choice too. You can't beat Minwah's help either. If you have any problem... if you post it up in the Software forum... he will more than likely respond! I say go for MAMEWAH!!!

It does MANY emus too :)

All together good FE! GO FOR IT! If it doesn't work for you, you can try out GameLauncher et al.

I've recently switched from GameLauncher to Mamewah as well.  GameLauncher was slow, buggy as all hell, and with the recent talk of it going shareware, I decided it was time to switch.

Mamewah has been BY FAR the easiest front end to setup.  Plus, I can configure the way the front end looks too with the designer.  I could even make it look like GameLauncher, if I wanted.
